It may be one of the most powerful, yet easy-to-use weapons in the game. Maybe these people haven’t been around Halo during Halo 2 and 3, but it has freaking homing missiles, THEY DO THE WORK FOR YOU. In Halo 2 (and pretty sure Halo 3), the rocket launcher had an almost exact lock-on homing feature like the Hydra, and the missiles curved LESS than the Hydra missiles. The hydra is easier to use than the Halo 2 rocket launcher and that’s saying a lot. Why some people say it’s difficult is beyond me.
And please don’t complain about the reloading time, that’s there for a reason. Similar to why many power weapons such as the SAW takes forever to reload: balance.
Halo 2 had the lock-on SPNKr, Halo 3 didn’t. Reach brought it back, but only for aircraft, same for Halo 4 and Halo 5. And I don’t particularly like the Hydra because I’m not all that good with it. I keep forgetting to scope in and lock on, plus I keep wading into the middle of firefights with it.
Its in the same category as the plasma caster. In the hands of those who dont know how to use it it is useless. But if you know what youre doing it wrecks.

No you could lock on to vehicles by aiming your reticle on them and holding the trigger. No zoom required.

You can lock onto someone, look straight up into the air and the rockets will still chase them down. Its only weakness is people running behind walls. The ammo count is pretty high, too.
It’s not. It’s funny how people will just run straight past it in arena, I always grab it. You need to play conservative with it and hang back using your team as a meatshield. Pop two missiles after you lock, usually in an upwards arc to get over cover. So many easy kills. The splash is next to non existent so people get upset when they pop off every missile and barely take away half their enemies sheilds.

or just know where to use it.
My favorite place:
@ Riptide
use the grav lift and stabilization jets (repeat until satisfied), you have an excellent field of vision to lock onto anyone at the most common choke points.
Well it’s one of the few weapons to have no aim assist when hip firing and its rockets will fall off at a distance. The amount of cover on some matches results in lock-one not killing anyone and its damage against vehicles leaves a lot to be desired. It’s mostly a support weapon and is the most affected when shot out of smart scope.
It can be really destructive with the correct circumstances. On top of an armory on ARC when half of the other team is rushing, and you just sit there and lock on while enjoying a cool beverage and relaxing.
It’s very good at medium range and in a open enviroment. At every other range or closed enviroment/obstacles it’s pretty useless. Hence, you must seek out situations that play to your advantage. The hydra doesn’t it my playstyle, so I will sell all of my hydras after I completed the commendation.

we all so you have to scope in, and with descoping, from the tiniest damage, is rather annoying. i would say they should make it so you can lock on either way but if you zoom you can lock on further, and damage buff. so if i dont zoom it takes 3 shots but with zoomed it takes 2. that would be better. you have to otherwise blind fire and hope for the best if you can’t lock on because you are getting hit and thats what you have on you. Not to mention it’s terrible at lock on. I’d easily prefer the Halo 2 rockets. It showed i could lock on and i would and shoot and hit the target. this its like “any time now for lock on would be great”. seriously some instantly lock on and they are moving around like crazy but some targets standing still or hardly moving took up to 5+ second to lock on sometimes. just the marker saying it’s attempting to lock on and its like “any day now sweet heart!”
It’s good to take out opponents who are not aware of you. However you will most likely die in a 1vs1 situation vs a BR, since you can’t lock on when u get hit.
