If you’re better than your peers, you’re better than your peers; them seeing your rank and you seeing their rank isn’t going to effect the results of a match.
It gives me something to work for, something to earn, something to visualize my personal improvement as a player. That’s why. Working at a visible rank was something of a trophy.
People enjoy different things. Deal with it.
Ranked matchmaking should be given to those who want it, just like people who want infection or grifball.
Competitive match quality and a decent ranking system to offer said competition.

to hold over there competition like a video game badge of honor. to use a tool of dominance on forums when it comes to proving points or just general crap talking.
If they truly wanted to be matched against players of the same skill type, then they shouldnt mind invisible ranks.
People like to strut around on the internet (or Xbox Live in this case) because unfortunately, it’s all some people have.

Because they’re tryhards.
Visible ranks make the player’s attitude and competitiveness to each game far more consistent. In Reach some games I would really want to win and some games I just wouldn’t give a -Yoink- because I had nothing to lose. In Halo 3 I HAD to win every game because my rank could go down if I lost.
This in turn makes for far more exciting close scoring matches as no one wants to see their rank go down. There were some moments like this in Reach but far less and it didn’t mean anything as there was no downside if I lost.
It’s not so many people.
It’s a few users and their alt accounts making the same topics over and over again.
I don’t even get what a ranking system is, so I feel left out of this week’s discussions.

It’s a system designed to provide balance, fair and competitive games to the playlists population.

I agree, and it’s also for the competitive players out there. Unfortunately, not very many players are good at Halo. The small perecentage of great players out there, enjoy ranking of all kinds, it’s a competitive thing. I wish they would just bring back global leaderboards somehow, I love seeing where I stand against my friends and the best of the best in my state and country/world.

Believe me, you’ll see more of it once the game releases and people start moaning even more about “how it’s been ruined by no ranking system”
As far as I know, there is a ranking system of levels 1-50 but it is not visible. People want it visible so they can show it off and say “my willy is bigger than yours”
Because it give me something to strive for. Its an incentive to do better hence I want to do better than the folks in my rank and I want to know were I stack up compaired to someone else/the community. If i’m climbing a mountain I want to know if I’m near the top.
That and the Main Reason is I want to play a match against people who are as good as me. If its unbalanced like with reach it’s a blowout for one of the sides and it isnt really fun for either team. Its no fun fighting a team who you can wipe out with a pistol alone or vice versa. We just want a fair game.

Yeah…I mean if you need a rank system to motivate you to play the game, you’re just not into the game. A game is worth the money if you enjoy playing it. Don’t really need motivation to play fun games.

This is one part of the argument for ranking systems I do agree with. I’m not bothered either way if there is a shiny number beside my name or not, but a way of implementing fair, balanced games would be good. Too often on reach games were won by a landslide and players quit without punishment

It’s a Spanish term that loosely translates to ‘the ladder of bragging.’
Give it a few more minutes 'til someone comments asking why players are whining over a small number made of oh-so-many pixels beside their names or something similar of the sort.
My guess would be… bragging rights? TBH, if a friend wanted to know if I was better than him, he’d challenge me to a one-on-one. I’ve been continuing the tradition since Halo 2.
