Why do Post's not come with a delete option?

I’ve been meaning to get to this subject for a while and now here I am and through that while I’ve pondered heavily over the subject as to why the forums don’t come with the option to delete your post? It doesn’t make sense. Let’s say you make a mistake on a subject like I do from time to time and you want to get rid of it to avoid embarrasment, WELP, YA CAN’T DO THAT! It’s there forever unless you go to a Monitor and ask nicely. Well theirs a problem there too, where can you find them!?

We shouldn’t have to go to monitors to clean up a mistake we made. We should be able to clean up our own mistakes. I’ve thought very broadly about this and their really is no reason NOT to have a delete button, no solid or good one anyway. Why didn’t Waypoint have a delete button to begin with anyway? It doesn’t make sense.

I agree. I would like a delete button

As long as you are not able to delete a post that has replies attached to it, then yes I could agree that if you make a post and suddenly realise you have made a mistake if would be good to purge it from the forums.

There is a list of monitors here currently, though it’s not up to date. I made a concept of new page that could be added to waypoint just the other day - similar to how we have a list of ranks, this is a list of the the current monitors, admins, etc. with links to their profiles or to send them a message (where appropriate and possible). Be nice if the web team could implement something similar so folk know who they can contact regarding any issues

I believe this is a point that has been thought about many times. Good and bad points. I mostly go to the bad points as there is more of them in my opinion

My thoughts against them are

  1. There is a edit button. If you post something embarrassing you can edit it.(aka you can use it like a text delete feature if you like, most regulars here respect that and move on the convo like normal)
  2. Would give people who created threads a lot of power. Aka if they delete a original post of a thread they make the thread could disapear. (while I am not sure if that is the case here it is the case on many other forums)
  3. If the rules are followed then deleting posts are not really needed. A simple edit would fix that problem. Waypoint is a nice community after all. We respect when user make mistakes.
  4. Monitor only power means that only serious posts are deleted. Or user requested ones. Just makes you careful about what you post
  5. Makes you careful about what you post. This is good cause you are less likely to make a huge mistake.(if delete a post was available then I bet there would be a lot more mistakes)
  6. Ruins flow of convos. If a user has a tendency to delete their posts then it would ruin the flow of older threads on the forums.
  7. Moderators and so on usually lock threads and edit posts. You hardly see them delete posts unless its serious.
