Why do people hate spartan abilities so much?

On these forums, I’ve come across a lot of complaints concerning Spartan abilities. So now I ask, why do you hate spartan abilities so much? What makes them useless? What makes them unnessicary? What makes them irrelivent? What is it that irk a lot of players?

It;s because they don’t like change and they feel that anything different from Halo 2 is a curse. And the fact that spartan charge is kinda over powered sometimes (especially when speed boost made it insta-kill thank god they god rid of it) and that the tiniest of height can still cause an instant kill with a direct hit for ground pound.

I do like the abilities but sometimes they’re just annoying

Because they completely destroy the core gameplay mechanics of what made halo halo
thats why
Because of things like sprint Spartan charge slide ADS the game has changed at a core level and not in a way that makes halo appealing to any audience

Also, the talking banana above me is wrong, the people
who don’t like Spartan abilities don’t like them because we are afraid of change, we just want change that’s going to change halo for the better

Less to do with change , and more to do with changes that are unnecessary.

Spartan abilities are just an extension of armor abilities (although they are better thought out , this time) Why is sprint necessary? To accommodate larger maps and gametypes? Then leave it in BTB and Warzone. Arena maps shouldn’t be big enough to need it.

Thrusters is an acceptable change , other than the fact that due to sprint and thrusters , movement has been slowed (or aim assist has been increased , not sure which , but pretty sure it’s the former and not the latter) as to make strafing useless.

Shoulder charge wouldn’t be so bad but for the super small radar that makes running around the map like a mad man a viable strategy.

Ground pound is horrible. I understand a direct hit from a thousand pound super soldier should kill the target , but landing close to me and expecting it to effect me in any way is stupid (this may have been patched out , haven’t played in a while).

A.D.S. on every weapon is horrid. It was never needed before because the weapons are smart linked to your’ H.U.D. , now A.D.S. affects accuracy and bullet spread at range for all automatics.

Because they, among other things, change the way Halo plays to the degree that I don’t have any interest in playing it. If I wanted sprinting/sliding/thrusting/ADS gameplay I would play Titanfall or Black Ops III, both of which do what Spartan abilities do, except they do it better.

When I see gameplay of Halo 5 I just don’t feel like I am watching Halo. Seeing gameplay of the no abilities classic gametypes(forget what it is called off the top of my head), and it was immediately more appealing. Mainly because it doesn’t look like anything currently on the market. No other mainstream shooter play anything like classic Halo does, But I can tell you about more than one that has Sprint, thrust, slide, etc.

More fundamentally the context in which these abilities exist is hugely important. I don’t like any of the .Spartan abilities in the context of a Halo game, but I have zero issue with each specific mechanic in other games. I might hate the inclusion of sprint in Halo, but I welcomed it with open arms in Battlefield because it actually solved a problem. The mobility of infantry in BF was really limited when vehicles were in scarce supply on large maps. Since the maps were already large to begin with you didn’t see a huge paradigm shift in map design to acommodate it. Sprint in Battlefield improved the infantry experience with taking anything away from another part of the game.

What problem does sprint fix in Halo that could not be solved by other means? The ‘slow’ feeling you get in a game like Halo 3 has more to do with its awful field of view than any issue with movement speed and traversal time. It doesn’t increase the pace of the game when it must A.) scale the maps to make room for itself and B.) Top movement speed is not the only measure of pacing, in fact it is often the least relevant. CE is still a much faster paced game than halo 5 despite all of it spartan abilities.

So long story short I ‘hate’ them because they change a franchise I loved into one I no longer want to play and its just depressing.

So I take it that they would be better if they were toned down a little more?

Armor Lock was a combo of -Yoink!- and Zika also feel that way about Spartan Charge. I’m fine with sprint and slide. The Jet Packs got old pretty fast. I just prefer a game where it’s boots on the ground and shoot.

Because Halo was fine and played 100% fine without them. As admitted by a 343 employee during his speech at GDC earlier this year, they only added the abilities, specifically sprint, because other games are doing it.

Sprint - I don’t hate it. I did like Halo better without it. It can really change the entire feel of the game knowing that everyone is moving at the same speed.
Ground Pound - I don’t really mind it. Adds a layer of strategy to the game. I’m cool with it.
Thruster - I genuinely like the thrusters. Again, it adds a layer of strategy to fire fights.
Spartan Charge - This is the thing I really can’t stand. I believe it promotes bad play. I just don’t use it though so it is not a terrible issue.

For the most part, I don’t mind the added abilities. But IMO, Halo doesn’t need them, and could be better without some.

Because they’re commonly seen as changes for the worse, not the better…

People want Halo to evolve in the right way, in my opinion, Thruster pack is a brilliant addition that doesn’t break the core gameplay…

The others simply feel like reworked Armour Abilities, Spartan charge combined with a small radar makes for very cheap kills. Ground pound should only kill if it actually hit, Slide feels like Halo is turning into a modern FPS and Sprint has been argued to death on the forums…

People don’t want Halo to stay the same forever, but the changes 343 have implemented are not improvements.

Because it’s Waypoint.

We don’t like change? Wrong. We don’t like unnecessary change that imitates other “cool” and “popular” fps games. If you want the features other games have, go play them, and let halo stay halo. Halo shouldn’t have to dumb itself down to make it more accessible to those of a different and short term audience.

I don’t. I personally enjoy them.

I get why people don’t like them though.

I don’t hate all of them. I just hate Spartan Charge to be honest. I think it’s OP and kids use it too often which makes MP more hide and seek than anything. Takes away from the game.

This pretty much sums up my feelings

I think the love and hate is equal

halo should really cover both sides with having classic options as well as the modern unfiltered halo and halo 5 is essential filtered to be more classic than people want but not pure classic so people may feel jaded about the game cause it kind of falls in the middle of what people wanted with less choice.

People hate them cause they’re “Different”.

Exactly. The audience that 343 is trying to market to either don’t care for Halo in the first place or aren’t the type to stick around for the long run. They’ll abandon the game once the next CoD comes out.

In short, keep Halo Halo and let those people play other games that cater more to their needs and play styles, because Halo clearly isn’t the game for them and it shouldn’t change to accommodate them if they’re just going to move on in a couple weeks for a newer game.

I just don’t like them because most of them really didn’t add much except a new pointless animation that hinders the game experience more than it helps.

I don’t see why spartan charge was needed when sprinting and using the melee lunge in Reach/4 was effective enough. Now it adds a needless knock back preventing an immediate second melee.

Slide is meh. I find myself using it more because thrust sliding is the fastest mobility method rather than actually using it as a tactical combat ability.

I feel like they added all these features dependant on sprinting because they knew there would be backlash ahead of time for retaining sprint.

Because they’re crap.

343 have just ignored the mechanics that made Halo popular in the first place; everything has been altered to suit the faster movement. The biggest problem is how pathetically short the TTK is. ADS is a pointless addition - it wasn’t warranted at all. I’ll say it again: the TTK is pathetic - too short for Halo.
