Halo CE had decent weapon sound effects. Halo 2 and 3 weapon sounds were atrocious. The AR in Halo 3 was like a BB gun. Halo Reach improved the sound effects. Halo 4 and Halo 5 further improved the sound effects.
Bungie gets 2 games with good sound effects(Halo CE and Reach).
Bungie gets 2 games with bad sound effects( Halo 2 and 3).
343i gets 2 games with good sound effects(Halo 4 and 5).
How on earth does anybody think that Halo 3 has better sound design than Halo 5? The newer Halos sound like real battles. They have deep rifle fire, echos, and sounds of bullets flying by. When I first played Halo 4, I noticed the huge improvement to sound design. Everybody focuses on graphics but underrates the sound effects. Yet, this is one of the things I hated about Halo 3.
This is of course my opinion. No one can be right or wrong. I was just wondering why so many people dislike the new sound effects. Is it because it sounds more realistic instead of like the older Halos? Or do these people just dislike everything that 343i does?
I am surprised by how many people hate the Warthog engine roar in Halo 4. Or the BR in Halo 4.

Yeah, it seems to be a popular opinion to dislike the sound of the Halo 4 Warthog. I am one of the few people who likes every aspect of Halo 4. Halo 5 is a different story. I like the gameplay but hate the direction of the campaign.
I personally think the sounds in halo 4 and 5 are great (not everything, but most everything). Just listening to the reload animation on the BR in Halo 4 is just amazing. I don’t ever recall footstep sounds as much as I do in Halo 4 or 5 either which I like. I mean, come one, a thousand pounds is going to make some sort of noise, right? Still, my favorite all time sound in any Halo game is the sound of the carbine firing in H2A. It’s just absolutely perfect. I really appreciate good sound and music in games.
Changing the sound design was another path away from the familiar feel of the halo franchise and with all the changes they made it was just another of many that alienated fans of previous titles. The real question isn’t weather the sound design is good or bad ? The question is does the sound design sound / feel like halo ?
Of 343I games, I like H2A the best I think. The sniper by far is the best sounding sniper. Bungie Halos I think I like 2 the best. They did the BR, Energy sword and shield recharge noise the best by far.

I thought the Reach Gun sounds were the best. They still had the characteristic noises of many of the guns from H2/3 but had much more power and bass behind them. I also miss the H2 shield recharge noise, an oddly specific thing, but I can recognize it in a heartbeat lol.
I also hate the 343 Warthog. What was wrong with the Bungie warthog sound? At least HW2 had the classic Warthog sound.
Honestly I don’t even pay to much attention to weapon sounds. I will say the halo 3 AR and the halo 4 BR are the most annoying things I’ve ever listened to, worse than scratching a chalk board

Imo, the real question is “whether the sound design is good or bad”. Why use outdated nerfed sound effects because previous titles used it. Keeping things the same is fine if there is a reason. Keeping things the same for the sake of it, just keeps innovation and improvement stagnant. It’s funny because I remember playing through Halo 4 mission 4(Infinity) for the first time, using the Scorpion tank, thinking: “wow these sound effects make me feel like I’m really in the game”.
I have played every Halo title and have no issue with the change of sound and art style. The Warthog is a good example of a change that I liked. It remains faithful to the classic Halos but looks more realistic with an external frame and extra fuel containers.
For me personally, some of the new weapon sounds lack the ‘punch’ that they used to have. The Battle Rifle and the Shotgun are two examples that come to mind. I understand that this is subjective, but I felt that the Halo 4 Battle Rifle sounded particularly bad due to this.
i don’t really care that much about the human weapons, the only ones i cared about the sound for is the rockets, and the sniper rifle, in the old halo’s they had a nice ring to it, now the rocket sounds meh while the sniper is ok. The plasma weapons is where i really pay attemtion to sounds, in the classic games they all had very nice sounds, while the new 343 sounds don’t sound entirely right. The halo 2 and 3 plasma rifle sound is one of my favorites, and none of the other plasma rifles just have that same musical ring to it.
As far as energy swords go, 343 changed the sound because they wanted it to sound more musical to the ears, however i like the classic sound better, and it’s also a more realistic sound, when that sword activates it should crack the air. I like the 343 sound as well, but not as much as the classic sound.
I think its because the people that played Bungie’s Halo games were used to how the weapons sounded, and when they played Halo 4, the sound effects were completely changed. I don’t hate or dislike the new sound effects, but it’s that feeling of just getting used to the new sound effects that make the original sound effects more appealing.
Because the sound design was more or less consistent with Bungie’s Halos. Halos 4 and 5 completely changed the sounds for absolutely no reason. The BR didn’t sound the BR we were used to and so on with the rest of the guns and vehicles.
