Why didn't the Forerunners preserve themselves?

Before the activation of the halo array, multiple stores of DNA were preserved so life could begin once more. If the forerunners did this to others, why didn’t they do it to themsleves?

The Forerunners preserved all of the other races as DNA samples and small populations on the Lesser Ark.
The Forerunners intended to preserve their own civilization in its entirety on the Greater Ark.
This plan was thwarted when the Flood arrived and obliterated the Greater Ark, leaving the Lesser Ark to repopulate the galaxy on its own.

Ok thanks a lot. Was bothering me for a while.

To add some more: after the Greater Ark was destroyed, the surviving Forerunners retreated to the Lesser Ark (Installation 00 in H3). After the end of the war and prior to reseeding the galaxy, the surviving Forerunners declined to take part in the rebirth of the galaxy. Instead they determined that exile was appropriate for their crimes against the Mantle and left on their “Great Journey”. If you haven’t read Halo Fractures yet, there’s a great little bonus story at the end about the Iso Didact and Chant to Green after they left the Milky Way.

True, and it reveals what the Domain actually is.

Silentium / Fractures spoils

Just a side thing, when Born-stellar leaves riser and his humans on Hawaii , he (or Riser) says he hopes that their (Riser and Born’s descendants) could meet again as brothers. It would imply that forerunners, if they survive with such low numbers for 100,000+ years, would eventually come back as a more humble people if they deemed their exile long enough. Unless the Fractures story implies they all went to separate places (chant, born and their son on 1 planet, others on other planets, with the intent to die out.)
