Someone brought it up in this forum section recently and honestly is there any reason why Reaches 20 Orbital Defence Platforms didn’t just start taking pot shots? I know its a CSO but MACs have got to count for something and given they were active during the ACTUAL assault it means they weren’t incapacitated.
Edit: I’m referring particularly to when the Long Night of Solace is revealed no the reserve fleet that arrives later in the Month
Orbital defenses were said to be under assault so they were probably busy. The Solace may have positioned itself out of range as well.
I believe it was station under the Orbital Defense grid, and those platforms definitely can’t turn on a dime, also the platforms were more than likely occupied.
Those defensive platforms wouldn’t have stood a chance against the heavy amount of covenant forces orbiting Reach.
Wasn’t Solace hiding from the UNSC until Noble Team blew up that one Spire thing in the campaign?

I think this is the main reason. The Long Night of Solace and the rest of the Fleet of Valiant Prudence arrived at Reach entirely undetected by the UNSC. Nothing shot at them because the UNSC had absolutely no idea it was there.
The UNSC forces at Reach were probably trying to limit spreading they’re forces, they knew The Covenant found Reach and would likely be sending reinforcements and since it was Colonel Holland authorising one frigate and a capable of Sabres it was most likely that the majority of UNSC Command at Reach was just debating how to commit they’re remaining asset’s.
Also since The Long Night of Solace was already below orbit by the time it choose to actively be engaged in the battle it most likely just sent it’s fighters, boarding craft, corvette’s ect to take out The ODP’s so by the time Thel’s fleet show’s up The ODP’s are lesser in numbers probably.
Yes this -Yoink-'s with The Reach novel alot
I’m just going to assume that the Covenant specifically positioned the Long Night of Solace below the Orbital Defence Platforms to avoid getting fired upon by them.
Sure the platforms could have orientated themselves to fire, but then they would be risking mssing and doing some pretty impressive damage to whatever they hit on the planet.

Both of these answers are correct. The Fleet entered the system cloaked and positioned itself inside the defense grid before the U.N.S.C. was aware they were there. When the Long Night was revealed , it’s position made it impossible to fire upon by O.D.P. grid.
Quite simply, the covernant used tactical positioning to flank us so that an appropriate defence would have been impossible to organize effectivley. The covernant were being quite smart about how they handled Reach. They knew they could not just use brute force. Hence the cloaked supercarrier. They positioned themselves in such a way as to prevent the ODP’S from being given a more direct shot.

Yes, but as people have been fond of pointing out, Covenant cloaking technology generates heat, it doesn’t mask it. Literally any soldier on the entirety of Reach could’ve looked up with some infrared goggles during a training exercise(over the span of weeks) and seen the largest known Covenant ship in an instant.
Unfortunately, as was pointed out to me plenty of times, Halo Reach, aside from it’s inaccuracy with the novel, also has several writing mistakes of it’s own.
Because Bungie decided to be -Yoinks!- and -Yoink- up a really cool battle by longing it out nonsensically.

Talk about stupid writing. Never was a fan of Reach’s campaign, but holy crap.

Unfortunately it gets worse than that. The ship had to BE there to deploy the cloaking-spires in the first place, meaning it wasn’t even cloaked when it actually arrived at Reach. What Halo: Reach does well, it does well, but there’s just… so much wrong with it.
Here, if you want to know more about it(and, given you’re not a fan of Reach’s campaign, you could use a lot of this as solid evidence of why) this is the article I read that convinced me. I like the writer of these articles because he’s usually very fair, giving credit where credit is due. (He’s also the person who managed to convince me on why Halo 5’s story was worse than I thought).
I’m confused did the Spires Teleport LNoS to Reach’s surface or just hide LNoS?

It was just a cloaking spire. The spire was able to teleport ships and such from the LNoS’ hangar/storage bays, but not something as large as the LNoS.

so then how did LNoS get to the surface unscathed?

Just one of MANY questions Halo: Reach leaves us asking -__-

Im fairly certain that ODPs can’t even turn, period.

Yeah, thats Haruspis, dude has his head on straight and SOLID.
He and Toa Freak from Halo Canon are some of the best lore-thinkers we have right now
