If she had overloaded in amber clad’s reactor it would have probably been enough to take out the gravemind on high charity. I mean she said that it would be a big enough explosion to take out the 05 halo. Why go through the trouble of going to the arc and setting off the halo there when she could have gotten rid of all the flood in a second?
Because Halo 3.
Because then they would have all died, and she didn’t want to risk a remote detonation because it may not have worked. It was lucky for her that the Arbiter had stopped Tartarus, really. Remember, characters aren’t infallible. High Charity was floating above Installation 05; it may not have actually caused enough damage to destabilize the ring. It probably would have, but it would have been a catastrophe either way. Still, real characters don’t always think clearly. Self-preservation, exhaustion, and Cortana’s questionable mental state, remember.
Would have killed all the flood in the area though and eliminate the gravemind, which is basically what the halo in halo 3 did.
Blowing up 04 Didn’t kill all the flood.
Mona Lisa and Halo 2’s Heretic missions showed that. Flood was drifting trough space on rubble from the ring. That is more dangerous then keeping it on the ring.
and just fly High charity into the gas giant so they don’t have anything that fly’s. and let the elites kill all the ships.
Like CE in Halo 2 Cortana wanted to prevent the Halo from Firing. It would trigger all other rings and kill everything.
I’m sure Cortana at some pointed wanted to keep the Gravemind busy.
Maybe Cortana knew about the Ark shortly after the chief left, and began to bank on that as the final solution for the flood.

Probably because the flood aren’t all on 05 halo, the ring itself only stores collected samples that have spread from that ring. The actual flood are spread across the galaxy in many different rings/worlds, etc…
