Why did the Elites break the truce?

Is it just me or did they mention it only once at the very beginning of the campaign when Master Chief says, “I thought we had a truce with the covenant?” or something along those lines, but never was it brought up again at least not from what I saw. Does anybody know why the truce was broken or did it just happen?

I wish 343 had told us, was such a stupid thing to leave out of a disconnected story.

343 said they were a different Covenant sect that branched off after the Prophets died. Basically, these Elites still believe in the Great Journey and that the Forerunners were gods.

Read some of the Halo books. It talks about it.

Yeah, it’s really weird that they left it out of the game. You think a simple piece of dialog involving Cortana hacking or the UNSC would have made it very clear.

The covenant had civil wars among them and they split into factions after the Human-covenant War. One faction decided to continue the great journey, and this is why the covenant is back in Halo 4. So the truce isn’t broken per-say, it is just that one faction broke off.

You have to read the books to fully understand the Halo 4 Campaign. You can get by without it, but 343 is taking the extended fiction really serious. There are a lot of things that you learn in the books that are in the game but are not explained in game.

The elites that split off are being aided by ONI who is trying to commit genocide on the elites so that we can be even which is stupid.

  2. They are a faction of the Covenant called the Storm. They do not know that the Covenant are no more. They fight in the most ancient of Covenant ways and know nothing else but the Great Journey.

Seriously, I would have prefered a full race of Prometheans to fight rather then just three and a handful of stripped down Covenant.

Yeah but what about halo 3 ODST don’t it come after halo 3 why is are we fighting the covadant then?
