First of all to be clear, I play H4 still, I don’t hate it, but I can understand why others do. So I’m not bashing, just to get that out of the way.
The population has drastically died since launch. I’ve heard so many reasons on why players quit. But I want to know why the majority quit. The main reason at least.
Basically just post why you quit or why someone you knew quit, and your thoughts on why the majority quit.
For existing Halo fans, there was too much Infinity and not enough “classic”/“Legendary.” For new fans, Infinity simply wasn’t that good at retaining players. That’s it in a nutshell (and being very generic, of course).
You may not get as detailed of a response as you’d hope for–this topic has come up over and over, and many of us are tired of it. You can go back through the Halo 4 forum and find topic after topic of discussion as to what is “the biggest reason” people quit Halo 4. You could also look in the Daily Halo 4 Population topic.
terrible lag because I regularly play against hosts from Mexico/Columbia = rage quitting
No skill gap due to sprint, bullet magnetism and low base speed means reduced skill gap
Terrible default maps and laggy forged maps
Completely broken gameplay in a variety of ways, including but not limited to sprint always on, jet packs, invis snipers, sniper magnetism, team sniper flinch, pocket shotguns, no descoping, ordnance, OP SAW/rockets, sucky strafing, loadout PPs/Plasmas on BTB maps.
Terrible hoppers and even worse management of those hoppers leading to
Only BTB has a regular pop over 800. At PEAK times.
Managed to completely lose the competitive population with terrible settings.
Halo 3 has more people in Social Slayer than H4 does in Team Slayer. That speaks VOLUMES.
From a pure gameplay and enjoyment perspective, Halo 4 was a disaster, mismanaged in just about every way. From a sales perspective, it has been a ginormous success.
I’m holding my breath on H5. I really hope they don’t piss me off. For now I’m going to play H3 customs w/friends and only the occasional MM game.
The population has been dropping for various reasons steadily since launch, but approx 5 thousand people (25% of the population) left the game when the Infinity Slayer playlist became DLC locked. That alone is a concrete reason for 5 thousand people to leave all at once as the numbers show.
The other several thousand that have trickled away can be due to any number of reasons, and we can only speculate. Some liked, some hated Infinity. Some liked, some hated Pro. MLG left due to negotiation issues (separate from the game). Online gameplay is dominated by different kinds of games now, and it is a different industry nowadays - people flit more quickly from one game to another than before. Any number of reasons could have led to it.

Actually that’s most likely due to GTA 5 getting released at the same time.
I still play a bit, but since Halo 4’s release, 3/7 people that I’ve played halo with for the last 6 years quit cold-turkey; why? Because it’s the worst Halo game to them.
The game lacks everything that former games had. It has non of the addictive qualities they h2, h3 and reach have. I may have hated Reach, but I was still addicted to it. I lose interest in Halo 4 in about an hour of gameplay.
I went from a 10-15 hour a week play time to about 5 hours a week with Halo 4.

Not saying that it didn’t play a part but if that was the primary reason then big team would of took just as big as hit.
1.Ordnance, both personal and random.
2.JIP
3.Insta-Spawn
4.AA’s coming back after many player had clearly stated after reach was out to please return to equipment or just get rid of it.
5.Loadouts. I do not like the boltshot or plasma pistol and grenades to be in the hands of players at spawn.
6.No good playlist at start and even now I just can’t have fun playing Halo 4 because of the Infinity settings
7.Terrible lag
8.CSR matching not working. No matter what playlist I play for some reason I have very not so smart players on my team. I have CSR30 and up on most slayer playlist.
9. Sprint
10. no de-scope
I still play but the main reasons why I think people quit are listed below.
Removal of Team Snipers (26/11/12)
Removal of FFA Throwback (3/12/12)
Removal of King of the Hill (10/12/12)
Removal of Slayer Pro (17/12/12)
Removal of Oddball and Team Regicide (11/2/13)
Removal of Legendary Slayer (3/9/13)
Basically is comes down to poor playlist management and I would have left when oddball was removed if there was another shooter on the market that actually played like Halo.
Reason 1: 343i changed a number of core mechanics of Halo (i.e. equal starts, map control points, vehicle advantages).
Reason 2: 343i left out a lot of classic features that were present in other Halo games (i.e. gametypes, custom settings, forge controls, Theatre function).
Reason 3: 343i does not seem to care what the community thinks or wants (i.e. they see us a “vocal minority,” the majority of the questions they address use the phrase, “We have no plans…”)
Reason 3.5: 343i has been dishonest with the community on a number of issues (i.e. the Crimson map pack mix-up, in-game CSR, the champions bundle incompatibility with Spartan Ops).
What others have already said.
Dumbed down gameplay built around stupid perks.
No/lack of weapon pickups on map.
Weapons that disappear after a very short period of time.

They had such poor playlist at the beginning.
No BTB objective, SWAT, Griffbal, Snipers or any kind of classic Halo gameplay.
I also now a lot of people that reached 130 and were thinking “and now?”
No ranked system, no motivation, no classic or competitive gameplay and a lot of lag made it not enjoyable for a lot of people.
(btw. didnt you play a 1v1 against ninja on Halo 3s guardian lowgi? )
IMHO lag is a more recent issue. If you’re looking @ why people quit in the first few months, I would look to the following:
too much change for the average long-time Halo fan (if it’s not broke, don’t fix it)
lack of quality maps (was a big obstruction for me, even though I didn’t quit playing till very recently)
a more competitive gaming landscape than Halo 3’s 2008 gaming landscape. Other developers have hit upon the magic blockbuster formula for now… it happens. as a Halo fan, I don’t expect every game to outdo the last. it’s just not realistic.
The reasons why I’ve stopped playing lately is because…
A) lag
B) unhappy with recent playlist changes (especially re: objective & KOTH experience)
C) I picked up another (computer) game which holds my attention for longer
