Why Did I Get Banned - The Official Thread

Hello. My name is Adam and my GT is “Mr Counselor” (without quotes). I was playing Halo: Reach online and was working towards the Weekly Challenge of this week by playing lots and lots of Grifball. I noticed for some reason, every once in a whole I would get a message to make sure I didn’t keep disconnecting, but I ignored it because I never disconnected at all. I thought that error message was strange, but honestly thought nothing of it. Anyhow, a few moments ago I received an information pop-up that my “XBOX 360 console was temporarily banned from earning any credits” and I can only assume it is because of the aforementioned message. Can someone over at 343 confirm why I was banned and if there was something wrong with what I was doing that may have accidentally violated the XBOX Live TOS or a violation within Halo: Reach itself? Thank you very much.

They are unrelated to eachother.

That is odd. Why was I banned then and how long does this typically last?

Hello. I posted the following in the spot where I thought I was supposed to (https://forums.halowaypoint.com//yaf_postst20947_Why-Did-I-Get-Banned--The-Official-Thread.aspx), but haven’t had any real feedback yet with regard to the reason for my ban.

I certainly did not manipulate the network conditions, I don’t know how to modify the XBOX360 hardware or game software, I certainly wasn’t idling or quitting games as I always play in every game I am a part of, and I wasn’t impersonating Bungie or 343, or any Microsoft Employee.

As aforementioned, I was playing a LOT of Grifball with some of my friends (we had a full team of 8 players). We were going back and forth killing each other, and most games were pretty evenly matched. There were a couple of games that were really close, and others that went by quickly because I was able to get to the ball quickly and score. If the banhammer thought I was cheating, I am really speechless. I don’t understand how I could have been perceived as cheating, as I was only playing the games. I believe I ended up with 15 wins in Multiplayer Matchmaking last night, and that was over a course of 3+ hours. If that is cheating, then I would say I’m very bad at it!

Please help me. I do not want, nor think I deserve, to have my account banned. Please let me know what I did wrong, so I know not to do that again, and also how long it will take for my account to be completely reinstated.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Adam Rothschild

Mr Counselor,

It sounds like you’ve been credit banned, meaning you can still play the game but you don’t earn credits afterwards. If what I stated is true, then it is most likely a credit ban (like I said previously) meaning that you reached the most amount of credits you can earn in one day, which seems likely since you said that you were playing a lot of Grifball. This type of ban doesn’t mean that you violated anything, but that you have earned enough credits that day (in order to keep people from ranking up very large amounts in a single day). The ban should be lifted after 24 hours.

Also, the disconnection you were experiencing had nothing to do with the ban.

Thank you for your reply, but it has been nearly 48 hours now, and I am still receiving two error messages. They are: “This XBOX 360 console has been temporarily banned from earning Credits” and “This account has been temporarily banned from earning Credits”. Please help me someone!

Mmmm… I’ve never actually gotten a credit ban so I’m not the best source of information on this topic, but seeing that there is limited help on this forum, I’ll do my best. I would suggest signing off of xbox live and signing back in in an attempt to refresh the temporary ban. Possibly then it will end.

If not, I suppose it is possible that I was wrong in my previous post. This might not be a credit ban, but actually a ban for “boosting”. Boosting is gaining more points at the end of a match by playing with a method that allows you to earn points quicker than possible. This can be done with friends by allowing each other to earn points unfairly. Example: Grouping together while someone shoots the group with a rocket launcher, getting a huge multikill medal. Since you did play with friends for a long period of time, you might have been suspected of doing this with your friends. I am almost certain that this is a boosting ban because not only is just the single account you used banned from earning credits (which is what would happen with a regular credit ban), but the whole console which suggests that you are being prevented from “boosting on another account.” It sounds like you were honestly playing the game, and that this is an unfortunate misunderstanding. This actually happens more than you would expect. This possible boosting ban could expand the length of the ban a little (possibly up to a month), but just remember the word ‘temporary’. Eventually, you will be able to earn credits again.

Thank you. I appreciate your feedback. I wish I had a better solution than to just wait patiently. Realistically, I wasn’t intentionally maliciously trying to do anything deceitful. This is definitely a misunderstanding, but it appears that the moderators or “powers that be” aren’t responding to this thread. It’s also a bit frustrating that I cannot earn credits on XBOX Live, a service I have PAID for, all because of a misunderstanding.

Your ban keeps getting renewed bcause of games like this on your record. https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/players/mr%20counselor/haloreach/gamehistory#!/?game=1190399897&section=Unknown

Even if you are not trying to boost… You are boosting. After you stop, the ban will stop renewing. Please don’t log in guest controllers online if your guest is going to just sit there. It fools the system into triggering the AFK Guest Credit Ban. First offense is a 24 hour ban, then 48… To many more of these triggers weeklong bans. I haven’t heard of anyone recently earning a perma ban, but you never know.

After the ban stops renewing itself, it will run its course and expire. Happens allot when people play with friends that don’t know what they are doing or if a parent plays with a child that likewise can’t play very well.

The Ban hits many innocent folk, please be sure your guest is actively playing to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Good luck to you and yours.

I did take a look at your online history and I think that TimZaRob is right about the guest you are playing with. I clicked on several random games you played and for every single one the guest didn’t do anything but die. Filling a space in multiplayer with an inactive player (or what seems to be one) will cause bans. Just turn off the second controller if no one is playing, get a partner with enough skill to do something beneficial in the game, or help your partner to play more efficiently.

I understand. I had my friend over that day and he was cooking and just left the controller there. I guess I should have just logged it out and back in when he came back. Nevertheless, that stinks. I don’t remember ever doing this before, so I don’t know why I am still credit banned. It’s been 4 days now, and I believe this is my first offense.

The problem is… It may feel like your first offense but the system is automated… So it counts every instance in your recent history which is at least 3 that I counted. And many others of a suspicious nature.

Not trying to be accusatory but the patterns on your history seem like "red flag, red flag, bannable… Flag, flag, bannable " that’s just your recent history

I totally agree. Mr Counselor’s ban shouldn’t last too long though if this is the first ban he’s gotten though, right? It should only take a long time if he’s repeatedly gotten bans and done the same thing to get banned again.

Getting 0 kills is actually very hard to do. It’s been tested many times. I took the challenge 3 times and its been determined acceptable to ban anyone that repetitively earnes 0 kills from earning cr. posted the results the first two times on YouTube

> Is it possible to get zero kills without being AFK? Very hard to do. I’ve tried multiple times but the enemies I face refuse to let me lose.
>
> “It’s not fair to punish people that aren’t good enought to get a kill by not rewarding them with credits!” I say it’s not fair to reward poor performance with credits, especially when you cause your whole team to suffer by not earning kills put still being present to give the enemy points every time they kill you.

Hello. My account and console have been credit banned for a week now, and I’m not sure why. If anybody could help me out and let me know why, that would be great. Thanks.

TheGregsaw, it sounds like you’re having a similar problem to Mr Counselor. I’d recommend reading this entire page as it was written to help solve Mr Counselor’s problem.

Hello, i got an Xbox off of eBay, it works fine, so i got a copy of Halo 4. But the console has been Permanently Banned and it wont let me play online. My Product Key will be given to anybody that will help, as well as my Serial etc…

Side Note: the account i’m using right now is just a temp account because i don’t know the pass to the account my friend is sharing with me…

That console is perma banned. Sorry. Most likely some modding was done or something broke in the Xbox that made it look like modding was at least attempted. Stop buying things used if you don’t get them verified as fully operational. If you could return it you should get your money back. Perma bans don’t normally get overturned.

DOH! i’ve been trying to get this sorted for 20 days :frowning: i can’t get a refund :’(

> DOH! i’ve been trying to get this sorted for 20 days :frowning: i can’t get a refund :’(

Don’t know what to tell ya, except a jerk cheated you. It’s against policy to unblock these consoles for many reasons…

Some like… It could still be modded… Or the person who was supposed to be banned could just buy a new account, come to the forums or customer service and say “hey, I bought this used xBox and its not working… Says I’m blocked, can I be unblocked because I bought it used… I never did anything bad” sorry again, innocent people suffer because terrible people take advantage. Good luck to ya.
