Why Did I Get Banned - The Official Thread

> I personally think it’s stupid to get banned for not getting kills, What if your new to halo or video games or maybe you have a guest, that sucks at halo, basically your getting banned for not being very good at halo. Isn’t there a better way to see if someone’s afk, like how many shots you made or if you were moving.

I think at this point most people agree the ban system has its flaws. But that is the nature of computer programs, there is always going to be flaws. There should be more criteria, such as checking for assists. But remember huamns are usually pretty smart, and mostly decietful. There are people that put rubberbands on the controller to make it look like they are moving, tape over the trigger to make it seem like they are shooting. So those are unreliable ways to check.

There should be something done, but at the same time if you have a guest or are new, I would suggest (you don’t have to obviously) going in to either a custom game, or use firefight to get better.

> So, I just bought an Xbox (again) about a week ago and the only game I bought… was Halo. Why? Because I am a complete Halo nut! Bungie is my favorite company… Well, Idk… was I guess is more of the word, maybe. Are they really the ones doing all this Multiplayer Temp Ban?? Or is it this new 343?? And is it really true that if you don’t get enough kills you will get booted as well?!? Idk what happened but, I do know… this is… you know what. I have been a loyal fan from Combat Evolved to Halo Wars and had to sell my xbox in hard times being the only reason I stopped playing (the ONLY reason I bought an xbox is for Halo). I have spent hundreds over the years collecting Halo merch and I cannot believe… That WE the PLAYERS would get banned for accidental kills, while people can run up on us, gun us down, and then not give us the option to boot. And what’s worse… Is if you have these accidents… you are penalized for it with a 10 min ban from the matchmaking. Really?!? If that is the case… I just want to know… So I can sell this xbox and the rest of my Halo stuff… cause, that’s crap and makes this xbox worthless to me!! :frowning:

343i is now in charge of the Halo franchise. However Reach still uses the banning system that was created by Bungie. The bannings are nothing new at all.

Yes, if you don’t get ANY kills, you can get banned. But it isn’t just that simple. It isn’t just one game, its a “pattern” the system looks for normally. I’ve noticed that most people that get banned (minus the custom challenges bannings of recent) have at least 3 consecutive games where they had 0 kills.

Now, the 10 minute bans…I personally think they are pointless, and sometimes unfair. At one point I was quit banned, because my disc was messed up and it wouldn’t load the maps. It sucks, but if you don’t quit for a bit it goes away. I don’t think it should count betrayal boots as a quit, but again, imperfect system. I wouldn’t say to go so extreme as to sell your xbox because you got a 10 minute quit ban. If you get 10 minutes, go to the bathroom, get a drink, get a snack. It is over relitively quick and you can go back into a game.

> My account and console has been ban for getting credits for about a week now and was wondering when or if I would be able to collect credits again. please and thank you.

You will be able to gain credits again. And the length normally goes off of how many previous bans you have gotten. I did a quick check of your game history and there are two things.

  1. I didn’t notice any AFKing (I didn’t dig really deep) were you doing custom challenges when you got banned? If not you’ll have to wait it out. If so, there is a thread here that you should post in and they will check it out.

  2. I am actually pretty impressed that even though you have been banned for a week, you have been playing even after the ban. Knowing you can’t get credits. Normally when someone comes here and posts, they say they were banned, and then they play 0 games from that time on. So good show sir, you are one of the few that plays for the sake of playing, and not just to get credits.

You were banned for AFKing as shown here: AFK Game.

Your ban is likely to last another week.

Look, I’m going to say all of this as nice as possible, so the control hogs don’t ban me for voicing my opinion… But, the ban system on Halo 2 and Halo 3 were NEVER like this. There was no temp bans and if you accidentally killed someone… You weren’t punished for it. People are getting charged 59.99 a year for these Xbox Live accounts and it’s really sad that people are going to get punished if they walk away from a game one too many times, or if they have to set the controller down and then be labeled for boosting! The old ban system was able to determine (most of the time) if you were straight up betraying someone or if it was an accident. Of all the years I have been a LOYAL fan, I can’t wrap my head around the fact that Bungie or 343 doesn’t give a crap about how the players feel about this. Cause, I can’t be the only one that is truly upset over this. I guess since I got my answer though, that tells me what to do… Sell out of this franchise and the xbox because, apparently that is what they have already done… And to anyone that reads this and thinks that I’m just a whiner… Sorry for you bad judgement… But, this game has always meant something to me but, now I feel crushed. You don’t understand how much of a die hard fan I am… Was… :frowning: Thanks for breaking my heart Bungie/343. </3

So you are annoyed because you were banned for betraying a team mate?

As far as I can see, it is justified, you need to be a lot more careful while playing, Halo 3s betrayal system is practically just copied & pasted into Reach, there is no distinct way to make the game tell the difference between an accidental betrayal and an intentional one.

I don’t know who you are and I’m not even going to guess but, I just want to make it clear… When I get a betrayal, it is usually because I am in a tank and I fire a shot, when I am thinking they have run back and then low and behold, as soon as I fire the shot… WHAM! There’s my teammate/s. Or, they won’t be around at all or I can’t see them and then WHAM! What-do-ya-know… I betrayed someone. And yes, for the most part it DID determine an accident and a straight up betrayal. Because, when I played before on Halo 3 (and I played ALOT) I could be in a tank, same scenario, kill some teammates on accident (and I don’t kill intentionally… not fair and I don’t want it done to me, even though it still happens) and guess what?? No WHAM! But trust me… If I came running after someone, gunned them down… Yes, they got the option and I got booted. That didn’t happen much, because I’m not a bad player (in that sense) so guess what, when I played Halo 3 I didn’t have anywhere near as much aggravation as I do with Halo Reach. I’m disabled and sometimes I just can’t see them!! So, yes, The Little Moa… I am beyond annoyed and a severely disappointed consumer/gamer.

Also, I could be 100% wrong but, it seemed like the ban system could recognize if you were shooting at someone on the other team when you accidentally killed your own team mate. Thus, you wouldn’t get booted because of the betrayal. Cause there were plenty of times I killed my own team mate cause they got to close to my shot.

You are looking way to in-depth about how it works, it has always worked like this:

The more times you betray someone, the less common it is for you to kick someone.
The less times you betray someone, the more common it is for you to kick someone.

It’s worked like that since Halo 3 and will likely continue to do so for a long time until they can perfect it in a future game.

I have been credit banned for 2 weeks and I’m not sure what I have done so I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on what I have done to get banned and to avoid it in the future.

GT: andrewww

Thanks.

It can be from a number of things, what have you been playing most recently on Reach?

Mostly score attack in firefight matchmaking.

> Mostly score attack in firefight matchmaking.

I went through some pages of your firefight history. By the scores they look like you didn’t do anything wrong there.

Did you do anything wrong in regular matchmaking?

Nope
Not that I know of anyway

RE: Credit Banned from Halo Reach

On Friday March 09, 2012 I was banned from earning credits (Two Week Ban). There was no reason giving and I am at a lost for what it was I have done. My goal in this post is to: remove the ban or gain info on why I was banned so as not to put myself in that position again or hopefully both.

I may be wrong on the dates it may have been Thursday that the games were played. This is what I was doing however.

Background: I have a windows phone and they come equipped with XBOX live. I downloaded Halo Waypoint for it and discovered that there is a custom challenge feature on it. On the about custom challenges link it states:
“Create and accept challenges, and the go into Halo: Reach to complete the goals within the time limit. The timer starts as soon as the challenge is created, so there is no time to waste!

Each challenge you complete earns you Halo: Reach credits [cR], although there is a preset limit on how many credits you can earn per challenge and per day.”

On the day that I was banned I was using this feature and have completed several challenges. I am not sure how many but it was more than 5 or 6 for sure. I work nights and haven’t had much sleep so I am fuzzy on the total. But suffice to say I was grinding credits cR, is what I was doing. The only other thing exceptional that day was an 18,000 cR slot roll.

The way I was using the custom challenge was to create a challenge and complete it by turning it in using the turn in key. I would have two challenges going at one time in fire-fight matchmaking. One was head-shots the other was total kills. The head shots would end before the total kills and I would create another head-shot to finish out the total kills. To me it seemed the most efficient way to grind credits.

Honestly this is what I was doing the day in question. So I am left in this position, is there a max on the number of challenges you can complete? Is there a max on the number of credits you can earn a day? I have not seen any info to answer these questions and feel that they are at the root of my ban.

Thank you sincerely for any input, please lift my ban, I honestly was not trying to do anything wrong. I enjoy Halo: Reach and would like full function of my account back. Suffice to say if I did something wrong let me know and I will not do it again.

Just curious, my friend My Day Is Good was credit banned recently. He had been playing with me almost the entire day and it doesn’t make sense as we weren’t doing anything and the ban only applied to him.

He changed his gamertag today, it was KimJongIlThe2nd before.

> > By messing up the score for your team(s) you deserved it. Stop whining about your “rights”, you little d-bag.
>
> It was a doubles game. He and his only other teammate were running around not getting kills. It was a group effort. He didn’t ruin anything for his team. Rather than name-calling, how about you work on your reading comprehension? I understand that the OP was using broken English, but it wasn’t that hard to decipher.

Somehow I missed the part that said it was a Team Doubles game. Nevertheless, he was still denying the enemy team a real fight, and by extension you could say he was detrimental to other players’ enjoyment of the game.

Off that topic; “D-bag” is a rather soft word, much softer than “noob” in my opinion, so I don’t know why you would get caught up in that. I’ve had a talk with a moderator and I won’t be using naughty words like that again, though.

I also noticed that you completely ignored the part where I re-direct him to Custom Games by the way:

> Play like like a man and be a team-player, if you just wanna mess around with friends you should play Custom Games.

It’s important for you to put me in the worst possible light, isn’t it?

p.s. English isn’t my first language either.

He was banned for AFKing in Living Dead.

I got caught up in the glitz and glamour of hoping to “boost” achievements. I got all of the original achievements for Reach ALL BY MYSELF, and got frustrated with how hard the new ones were, and how no one ever votes for playlists to get them. I saw a post in a private group on B.net about boosting so I figured I’d try it, not thinking of the consequences. It’s extremely hard to find a group of 12 people to try to boost apparently, so I figured why not use the extra controllers I have laying around? I didn’t really even think about getting banned or anything like that, just having fun I guess. Sucks to be me now though! I can still play, which is awesome, but being in the bad graces of the people and game I seriously can’t get enough of just plain sucks! Take it from me, don’t “boost” or akf or whatever it’s called. Don’t do it! I’ll take the ban, cause I did wrong, and I throw my Halo mercy to the court. I’m sorry, I’ve definitely learned my lesson, and please find it in your heart to forgive me. Won’t happen again…

@BricK1176

The exact same thing happened to me. I’ve been posting since Saturday, and have gotten absolutely no response.

GT: keydet1993
Ban: 3/9/2012

I was using custom challenges on Gruntpocalypse. I performed the same functions you did. . . meaning I created challenges, and as they completed, I created new challenges of the same types/targets. I was able to get around 80,000 cR in custom challenges playing 6 Gruntpocalypse and a FF match.

What I don’t understand is, why I was banned. I used the custom challenges screen on the halo waypoint site, created challenges, completed challenges, and turned them in as I finished. We have nothing to do with how many cR are awarded. . . that’s a 343 setting. All we do is fill in parameters such as type, target, and time, and 343 does the rest.

I would like for the community to review my game history to see if there is anything I’ve missed.

Per an XBL rep, I even posted on the Bungie.net site, only to be told to post here. I’m also tired of the "you must have reset challenges. . . " remark. If I’m not mistaken, I’d have to unplug my xbox, reset the date, and work the challenges again. Not worth it in my opinion. Am I missing something here? If this were the case, I’d be happy I only got a 2-week ban and keep my mouth shut.

343 - could you please take a moment to review? I think this needs a little human intervention. And I ask, what exactly did I do to trigger the ban? I think I deserve at least that much.

Thank you.

To the concerns over the Custom Challenge bans, I may be able to shed some light but overall, this is my pure speculation.

Last week, I believe there was a bonus for Custom Challenges going on regarding Grunts, which rewarded bigger cR payouts for Custom Challenges, I am starting to think the ban hammer saw: WOAH, HE GOT A LOT MORE THAN HE SHOULD HAVE, BAN.

But I can’t be sure, it seems like a minor mistake on 343s part with rather larger consequences.

A word of advice is to PM Total Sellout, please talk in a polite tone and don’t act like a mean person, if you talk chilled, you will get a chilled response, explain your situation and he should help you out, I’m only recommending him as I believe he has a hefty amount of control over the ban hammer (he tweeted one day how he banned a Firefight AFKer in his game) and he said he was looking into my ban the last time this rolled around.

> > Just curious, my friend My Day Is Good was credit banned recently. He had been playing with me almost the entire day and it doesn’t make sense as we weren’t doing anything and the ban only applied to him.

How was he AFK? He commited suicide a bunch. He even got more kills than I did.
