If you haven’t read The Fall of Reach, then this post may not mean much to you. If you have read the book, then I’m sure you’ll understand why I’m posting this. Reach’s campaign began on July 24th and ended on August 30th. In The Fall of Reach though, the attack on Reach began on August 30th and ended that same day. Don’t worry, I’m not going to start raging about how they messed up the timeline, but I’m just curious why they did. Bungie knew that in the book, the battle of Reach lasted one day, so why would they make the campaign of the game over a month long? The story line of the Halo Trilogy and ODST all made sense, but Reach’s just didn’t. I’m glad 343 is making sure the stories of the books and the games will all fit together now, but I don’t think I’ll ever quite understand what happened with the story of Reach’s campaign.
The book never actually stated that the battle started on the 30th, that is simply when master chief and the rest of blue team (and red team) began engaging covenant forces.
I thought that too at first, but then I read the book again. Chief is on Reach on August 29th and the Covenant fleet hasn’t arrived yet.
According to Bungie’s incredibly broken logic the Video Game canon overwrites the Book canon.
Regardless, I still find The Fall of Reach the better story. The game’s storyline was just awful.
To save an in-depth version, Bungie always stated that game canon overwrote book canon.
Great planning, Bungie (sarcasm).

Yea, I agree. Reach(game) never made sense to me.
$
They wanted to make an entertaining game.

Cannon or no cannon they don’t even follow their own story.
In halo 2 they said Reachs invasion was 3 times bigger than the Earth invasion, there was barely anything in the reach game.
Edit:
My mistake it was 50 times, not times by 3, still there was barely even a scout ship or 2 in the Reach game.
6:22 direct quote “The invasion that destroyed reach was 50 times this size”

Erm… what are you saying? In the final cutscene of LNoS, one can see at least a dozen CAS assault carriers, escorted by smaller naval vessels. I the first covenant forces to arrive were part of a scout group. Read up on your halo canon bro.
Although a lot of it -was- some cheap shots at changing the lore for the sake of ‘better gameplay’, there’s actually VERY LITTLE that contradicts the established canon, contrary to popular belief. A lot of it is in the dates of when stuff happened.
Not all of it is forgiven of course- the biggest contradiction that still exists is the PoA’s ability to land and pick up the fragment Cortana. Other than that, however? Most of the canon between the game and book are able to be justified by careful examination of the dates. It also helps that 343i did those data-drops. They helped alleviate some inconsistencies as well.
Just spend some time researching the topic and you’ll find it’s not -as- contradictory as you may initially think.

There were two, huge, canon breaking mistakes: The Pillar Of Autumn is unable to enter atmosphere with destabalizing, and more importantly (and this makes me lol) the last few missions of the campaign are completely corrupt.
MC already had cortana (C’mon, half the campaign was you getting into the lab, getting cortana and escorting her to the POA) and he was not in cryo sleep on the POA until they hit hyperspace.

Only the PoA is a break here, actually:
-
Have you ever read First Strike? AI can fragment. That was -not- the main Cortana, so much as a splinter-Cortana. This is even further justified if you read Halsey’s journal, which if memory serves (I only read it once through) she mentions that she’s only using a splintered version of Cortana for her research.
-
The basis of -when- the PoA could have possibly landed is incredibly slim. However, it -is- possible the landing either occurred right before the PoA left, or before it reentered space to combat the Covenant. Either one allows for an unbelievably small time frame of course, creating that contradiction in the canon.
-
If it was the former (the PoA did an emergency landing to pick up Cortana before leaving the battle), the ‘chief in cryo’ could be confirmed instead as Linda. However, it’s an easter egg- not to be taken seriously. If I were to EVER take that seriously, it would be Linda. There would be no reason for them to put Chief into cryo in the hangar- Linda, however? She was in a critical condition, and there WOULD be reason enough for them to have a cryopod on the hangar ready to receive her.
It’s all in the canon, mate.
Think bungie wonted to do they own thing with reach weather it was like the fall reach or not.
