Why did 343i take so many cues from Reach?

It just doesn’t make sense to me. Surely they knew making a game more akin to Reach would not prove as successful as a more competitive Halo game. Nearly everyone wanted a Halo game more in line with the Halo 2/Halo 3 style gameplay that proved incredibly successful for so many years. Instead, 343i decides to take cues from the almost universally hated Reach…then further bastardizes it with even more CoD elements. I truly do not understand what they were thinking with many of the choices in Halo 4. Join In Progress? Progression Ranking System? Custom Loadouts? Ordinance drops?
What the hell? This is not the Halo I know and love. Yes I mad…and confused

As much as I hate it, reach made a ton of money.

I know how you feel, it doesn’t make any sense.

This is supposed to be Halo 4, not Halo: Reach 2.

One of the things that would make my day is disabling assassinations globally.

Yeah they are badass to watch but it’s not uncommon to accidentally initiate it, especially when you’re under pressure.

Honestly, 343’s vidocs and trailers before launch tended to show off more of assassinations than gameplay mechanics. Flashy gimmicks should not be the main attraction.

> As much as I hate it, reach made a ton of money.

Of course it did but the population died fast due to the lackluster multiplayer and this ended up hurting sales post launch window. Halo 3 continued to sell incredibly well for years after launch because its online community was dedicated and constantly flourishing.

Sorry but you hurt my feelings OP. I LIKE reach MORE than 3. So it had a few teeny tiny issues, big whoop. The DMR was AWESOME and perfectly balanced, the campaign was incredible, lots of great new features like assassinations were added, the graphics were the bomb… I don’t know what everybody’s problem was.

Halo 4 is NOTHING like Reach. I’ve played Reach for months and Halo 4 is totally different.

Halo 4 brings some cool new features to the table like the flagnum… And that’s about it. Personal ordnance is unfair, “dynamic” ordance isn’t random at all, JIP sucks, and the community sucks. My team members betray me and score my flags. That’s the real reason CTF now sucks. You probably new flood sucks right? Dominion is… boring at best. Team regicide is actually awesome! Halo 4 lied about everything else, and is by far the worst Halo game I’ve ever played.

Comparing this broken beta test of a game to Reach is an insult.

My game case says Halo 4. When I play it, it says Halo 4. How did you get Halo: Reach 2?

Halo Reach was where the series went wrong for the majority of the community (myself included). Halo 4 has just continued the trend of further “modernizing” Halo to compete directly with CoD. What 343i doesn’t seem to understand is that people play Halo to play Halo…not CowaDoody in sPaCE!!1! CoD does CoD well…Halo should never have tried to copy it.

i like Reach .

I wasn’t aware that BO2 had jetpacks, removed stuff that kills for you, removed modifying guns, and slowed their game down tremendously. I also didn’t know they added in vehicle combat as well. Why wasn’t I told we can actually jump more than 2 inches off the ground in BO2?

Seriously, did I miss out on the buff they gave to their radar, and nerfed the hell out of grenades? Heck, why did they remove the ability to cook the grenades as well? At least deathstreaks are gone. But so is the match-ending nuke.

OMFG you guyz, 343 know what they are doing, this game is nothing like COD. Just wait until the game is relea- oh wait…

At least Reach got some PLAYLISTS right…

You’re looking at a CoD player. This game plays nothing like CoD at all. It’s still Halo, and may I make a deduction that you’re not familiar with CoD as I am? Halo 4 still plays awesome! The sad thing is that not many are okay or familiar with the features.

some people have different opinions, for instance i like reach more than halo 4.
these opinions you have to respect not try to change.

Loadout/perks. specialization akin to prestige. no skill based ranking(which apparently CoD:BO2 had somewhat implemented, ironic). smaller skill gap.

yeh, Halo of Duty: Future Warfare.

Reach was awesome IMO but I agree, Halo 4 plays more like a sequel to reach rather than 3. It’s sort of disappointing, I really wanted the classic gameplay to comeback . Oh well

Smaller skill gap? Really? Smaller than CoD? Nope, CoD is still easier to play for me. In case you haven’t realized yet, Halo 4 is not finished, and it will include ranks soon. Specialization is prestige? I don’t remember CoD having a rank lock, or reaching SR 130 limit? No, SR still continues on the rank. It’s just numbers instead of rank actually. Loadout not really, too shallow. Perks, yes kind of, but some are different. However, the major factor of CoD and Halo is the gameplay. The gameplay is way too different from each other to be the same! Don’t tell me that Halo 4 is CoD because I have experiences with it, and I know how to tell them apart. I have played all CoD except BLOPS 2.

OP= I have no -Yoinking!- idea

As a whole, Halo 4 is more “Reach 1.5” than any previous game was “Halo x.5”. The basic engine seems to be a direct port. Quite a few bugs from reach still exist, such as AAs appearing for a second when a player spawns and the inability to change a filename without saving a new copy.

Reach was still a good game, not HCE, H2 or even H3, more akin to ODST. Solid campaign (ignoring canon/non-canon arguments), improved Forge & good multiplayer/custom games.

At least with Reach loadouts were set out so everyone was on even footing; get killed by someone with active camo? Switch up & choose it when you have to respawn, play them at their own game.

Plus you could easily disable the loadouts, even tweak some settings & hey presto, its pretty close to HCE or H3.

Haven’t managed to achieve the same with H4 so far (but I haven’t focussed too heavily on doing so, busy with RL + other games).
