Doctor Catherine Elizabeth Halsey. Creator of the Spartans and the massively sophisticated A.I. Cortana, Halsey was targeted for assassination by the UNSC for temporarily siding with the Covenant. Escaping with her life with a later-amputated arm, Halsey made a deal with Covenant commander Jul 'Mdama to continue helping them in their crusade to continue what the Didact started in return for revenge against the UNSC. The day of Jul’s assassination by Fireteam Osiris, Halsey’s first spoken words to Spartan Locke are “Took you long enough”. This implies that she has since formed contempt towards the Covenant. Why would 343i throw away what they had going? Halsey is, hands down, the most important human on the planet. Without her, all sentient life in the galaxy would cease to exist as the Master Chief and Cortana wouldn’t exist. Having her turn against us would be the best story ever told in the Halo lore. Why throw that out for the scrapped Halo: Combat Evolved story of Cortana growing mad with power? Am I the only one who feels screwed over?
No because she’s the easiest target. She was Jul’s hostage and there would be no way of her stealing his power base so she would quickly run out of resources on her own. She constantly gets tracked down, not to mention she doesn’t hate the UNSC, just ONI for basically backstabbing her. She wouldn’t fight the UNSC since that would bring around the inevitable stand-off against John and he wouldn’t give her as much leeway as he did Cortana with trying to talk her down.
I think both stories would be iffy at best!
343i has shown me one thing in the past 2 halo instalments! They cannot make a storyline that connects the player like ANY of the past Halos! WHY? I don’t know, but it fails miserably. The pre launch trailers are amazing, but then at launch we find out they’re complete lies and mislead the whole gaming world. And then the sudden attention given to fireteam Osiris was botched. I have no issues with Osiris as a main group in the game but Just compare the connection to Noble team and then compare it to Osiris, That’s proof enough I believe in the failure of the past 2 campaigns
Cortana didn’t actually go mad with power, it was rampancy. I know the games didn’t really touch on this about AIs much before Halo 4 and can see why alot of things confused players who didn’t read the books. But basically “smart” AIs like Cortana have a limited life span because they will eventually think themselves to death, going crazy pretty much in the process. So it actually made sense kind of to use her as an antagonist. I mean yeah they could of went in another direction but this one was already there, all they had to do was put her in a position to do some damage…and damage she has done lol

Replay halo 3. You will see that she isn’t sane.

I know the lore. It was just poor wording on my part. She was rampant and had all the power in the universe in her hands which facilitated her insanity further.

Definately true, all the data she took in from the first ring and all kinds of other systems after that gave her more knowledge/power and expediated her rampancy
I think the story telling suffered because you barely played as the Chief. As an original owner of Halo 2, I can tell you there was a LOT of backlash for the split campaign (even though it was closer to 50/50). The Arbiter is now a critical piece of the story and a vibrant character, but he wasn’t too liked at first. Once 343 (hopefully) refocuses on John-117, I think the story telling becomes more crisp and enthralling.
And while Noble Team was MUCH more interesting than Osiris, I think it’s because we knew we were going to be playing as a new character well beforehand. We were able to have an open mind. I personally didn’t find out Locke would be the MAIN character of Halo 5 until the day before the release.
Jul ate the last Twinkie and that was the last straw, that is why I turned on him.
