or else you get the nonsense that just happened to me. I queued some firefight, got put into a game in progress with a bugged grunt wave stuck at 55/100 with 1 minute left. goodbye to that xp boost

You still get your XP Boost amount (if it’s a straight XP boost rather than a gambit) in post-game, that won’t be affected by a Defeat.
When you join in progress, you can still get XP from boosts as long as the game lasts long enough. If you use some of the most general boosts like XP Boost and XP Jackpot, xp from these boosts will be provided to the player despite the fact that you joined in progress and failed the game.
It’s also relatively good that these boosts will provide xp to the player from these games as otherwise, the xp collecting process would be slightly less efficient compared to being unable to use boosts in every single game. This can be achieved by having good knowledge about the xp boosts in Halo 5 like having general knowledge about the payouts from the boosts and risks related to using boosts like Gambit and Mission: Victory boosts providing nothing.
In addition to the above, your boost will return to your REQ collection in case you don’t meet the requirements for it. An example would be losing a match when you equip a “Mission: Victory” boost.
They are returned to your inventory after a little bit.
I agree with why should a boost be used if you join a game in progress, its really dumb and annoying to join a game only to play for 20 seconds then the enemy team wins.
Understandable; it’s happened to me before but I never really thought too much of it. Maybe it’s cause I wasn’t using something like a Legendary boast or something. Maybe the silver lining is thank god it doesn’t happen that often, I hope. If it does, bummer.

Using a legendary boost on a JIP is literally the most efficient way to use one. It’s 11250 XP regardless of everything else.
The boosts which shouldn’t be used are gambits
If it’s a standard boost, the exp you receive is the same no matter if you win, lose or how long you’re in the match for.
Gambits can be wasted if you join in progress.
Victories only redeem if you win. If you lose, a boost is refunded to you.
If you’re looking to level quick or gain lots of quick req points. Using boosters and hopping into matches already in progress is actually the best way.
If you do this method with Mythic Warzone Firefight, you get some of the highest exp per minute matches in the game.

Can confirm, joined for the final 30seconds of Mythic FF, got 2 kills and used my Legendary XP pack and got darn close to 20k XP for about a minute of investment including finding the match and loading the game.
I felt like I won the actual lottery for the rest of the day after that
