Why Change Progression?

Unpopular Opinion Warning :warning:

Why placate to the whining? Everyone wants to be rewarded for just playing. That’s more frustrating.

343 says they want to get back to what Halo is and what it represents. Halo is not participation trophies. Kids today don’t remember what progression was like in Halo 2 where a level 30 was on the verge of God. Or Halo 3 where a50 was so sought after that people were selling their accounts on eBay.

Yes, an easier progression will keep more players, until there is nothing left to progress for. I’m not saying go all Destiny kinda grind, but I haven’t found the progression to be terrible.

I feel like the current progression system is in place so that people don’t rank up super fast, and also to keep people from going afk during matches and still getting xp. I actually like the challenge system more especially for that second reason.

If anything, to me getting points for challenges seems more akin to a participation trophy, it’s like “hey you lost, but you did what we asked and killed 3 people with a needler so you get a sticker!”

Getting points for winning games, completing objectives, and killing enemies feels much more rewarding to me when I’m playing well. Then again I’m all for participation trophies too, -Yoink!- feels nice.

Wrong halo 3 you unlocked armor through singular achievements i know because i got to Recon, I preordered halo infinite for 80 dollars i want my full multiplayer experience not some garbage half baked cash grab.

I would agree with earning more XP for winning, especially in Ranked. The thing that really gets me is this went live 3 days ago, and immediately backlash about progression.

I’d rather see improvements in gameplay than progression.

Do you mean to say that it’s better to get xp for doing well during matches, or are you in favor of the challenge system?

Why should anyone be rewarded for not playing well? That only encourages AFK players. That was the problem with Reach.

There wasn’t a Balle Pass before. Your argument is apples and oranges.

simply put it wasn’t fun it was boring after a while and like most folks after like 3 or so hours only hit rank 1 or 2 it wasn’t fun now if you didnt mind it thats fine

I mean in all fairness, we first learned about these issues with the flights weeks and weeks ago. I could see some gameplay improvements (like holy crap why are assassinations gone?) but this is a BIG thing that has had community backlash since it was announced and for some reason they thought they could just dump the game on our plates and make us eat it…

The Battle Pass argument is invalid as they never go away and there is no timeframe in which it must be completed.

You pre-ordered the campaign. The multiplayer is F2P and was known to be for a year or so.

I feel like I have to say this, because people get really angry with anyone who talks poorly of halo infinite: I find the gameplay ever so enjoyable, I think the equipment, weaponry and vehicles are so fun to use, the maps are unique and awesome (although I think there definitely needs to be more maps, some with different biomes such as snowy mountains, deserts, jungles etc.)

Now my only big problem with this game is the progression system, it is the worst progression system I have ever experienced, that is not an exaggeration. You have to think about the average halo player, they will probably only be able to play one or two btbs a day (like myself since I am quite busy) with the challenge system I am lucky to complete a single challenge in one day. The progression is ever so slow, it is in fact infuriating. I find the gameplay enjoyable, but there is no reason to win a match or try hard, because it wont give you an EXP, instead every player us running around looking for the equipment/vehicle/weapon they new to complete their challenge rather than the objective. There is also no reason to play ranked as you get nothing from it. If they just made the progression like every other first person shooter no one would be complaining. People do not have the time to complete all these challenges or level their battle pass up, it takes away from the amazing enjoyable gameplay if everyone is running around doing random things.

Some people will say I’m complaining, however this is feedback, which is what a BETA is for. I love Halo, however im not gonna -Yoink!- for it as hard as some people are, I want it to flourish.

Are we really comparing a battlepass to halo 2 and halo 3’s skill ranking system?

If so… lol

I mean I agree on the trend towards instant gratification to make casuals feel special, BUT you still need a balance.

Like you need low level stuff for casual play, mid level, and high skill.

TBF, I like the system being challenges only with a basic match competition credit. It’s just how you get your challenges that’s a little annoying to me.

I’d prefer selecting a skill track, like you telling the game what kind of player you are and it gives you like 4x weeklies within your wheelhouse that you can swap + 2 OUT of your wheelhouse you can’t swap just to get you to try stuff a little bit. Along with basic dailies.

Plus most XP systems get exploited quickly when there is a flaw, so for now I’d rather have it be too slow vs cheese. It’s also the final beta test before launch, so most of the crying/copycat posting on the forums is from kids being overly emotional

Halo 2 gave you full color and icon customization of the gate, as well as had elites as a playable option.

The base game doesn’t even have those features.

I’m a pretty good player and I vehemently disagree.

The new system is very fun having random challenges as otherwise I’d probably just be stuffing turkeys off spawn with the BR all game.

Halo is a competitive shooter, rewarding good performance is the point. If you aren’t performing good, get better. Halo has always been a battle of skill mainly, there were no unlockables in Halo 2 and yet it was arguably the best Multiplayer FPS game ever made because of the competitive aspect that was also enjoyable by all. Its why Halo 3’s ranking system is always talked about.

This why there have basically been two progression paths in the halo games since Reach:

  1. Ranked progression for ranked play
  2. Spartan rank for overall progression which respectfully rewarded players for their time spent playing.

The current Challenge only progression system goes against the very goal that 343 set out to make which was to allow players to play how they want and be rewarded for it.

As things are more and more players are focusing on completing challenges rather then play the objective. I myself have encountered numerous lobbies where players are camping weapons, vehicles and quitting a match because they didn’t get the map with the weapon or vehicle they need for their challenges.

This flat out isn’t healthy for the game.

It’s not just XP, it’s the fact that challenges are the only way to progress in the battle pass. Also those same challenges force you too play in a way that is usually way to niche. Running around looking for a gun while someone has your flag or defending, sucks big time. No rewards for doing well in a match, medals mean absolutely nothing. Trust me it’s not all about easier and more XP.

So what you’re saying is:
The kids participation award-
“Here’s 100 XP for a triple kill, here’s 200XP for a killing spree, here’s 150XP for a no scope, here’s an extra 100XP because your team won the game.”

VS.

The Chad not participation award-
“Your team lost and you only got 3 kills and 18 deaths but you still ran over someone with a mongoose like we asked you to, here’s 300XP.”

Am I missing something here?
