Why Can't Anyone Drive Warthogs

Seems like anytime I get in the gunner spot someone gets in and immediately rolls the -Yoink!- thing. Or they drive away from what I’m shooting at.

Even if they left it in the same place it would help more

I had a problem where the driver kept driving away from the enemies to an area with absolutely nothing. I eventually just killed him…>.>

Oh god, the drivers I’ve had…

For the love of god, IF we manage to get the -Yoink!- Gauss on Exile, DON’T DRIVE INTO A GROUP OF 5 ENEMIES!

Luckily I usually have a friend drive me, he’s pretty good at driving. And I’m pretty darn good at shooting. Less rage, more amusement.

I actually prided myself on being one the better drivers on Reach. But I flip the warthogs CONSTANTLY on this release. I think one, ego-soothing, explanation is the tweaks to the driving mechanics.

Of course, there is definitely a level of stupidity that goes with most drivers haha, you just can’t explain their decision to AVOID combat if you are both at full health and your warthog is nowhere near toasty! They just bad, that’s all!

It’s not that people can’t drive. It’s that the Warthog sucks. It’s too easily flipped over, and gets blown pretty easily by DMR and Sniper bullets, which actually seem to be more dangerous than Plasma Grenades and Plasma Pistols…

OP, if you think the driver’s are so bad, perhaps you should consider being a driver and letting someone else take the gunner position?

I generally take the driver’s position and driving is no picnic. It’s hard enough that the warthog drives like a potato on wheels, but when you combine the fact that the ground that the person is driving on is rarely flat, the slightest bump can tip a warthog over, and the fact that shots make the warthog less stable, it’s amazing that anybody gets in a warthog at all. It’s better than it was in Reach, but it still needs some huge stability adjustments, durability, and damage boost to the chain gun.

I’m still having some trouble getting use to the new vehicle physics. There somewhat small changes, but they are just enough to throw me off.

The key is to slow down when the gunner is firing, most drivers don’t get that. The biggest problem is that in this game, power weapons are far more common. I’ve given up driving for people because I constantly get splasered.

It does seem easier to flip as well. I hit a ghost dead on the other day and ended up rolling over top of it.

I stopped getting into the hog because everytime i do my driver runs straight into the enemy and dies -_-

i consider myself a good driver, namely because i put time into the driving then shooting

what i find if that you want to stay back and simply do strafing runs past them a couple of time, if it’s a dog fight (minigun hog VS minigun hog) drive away and then come up on the unsuspecting

I got an onyx wheelman commendation in Reach, but I’m really struggling with the Hog in halo 4. I find it tough to get a good run in the chaingun Hog because:

1- The maps.

Meltdown, Longbow and Vortex have very narrow, predictable paths available to the Hog. Meltdown in particular has one single figure 8 road that is barely passable by the Hog at certain points and is usually occupied by one of the 30s respawn mantis.

Exile is more conducive to warthog play but the presence of the guass hog, the scorpion and the banshee make it a poor tactical choice. Also at certain points of the map it is impossible to not not drive right by a little infantry hidey hole or trench.

Ragnarok is probably the only map where the Hog can freely roam. However, the long lines of sight, combined with the power of DMR teamshot and the POD system mean it tends to get picked off very quickly.

2- The loadouts.

This is the big one for me. The combination of plasma nades and pistol in initial loadouts, makes it far too dangerous to get close to infantry for fear of being stunned and/or stuck. This means that the hog can only safely pick up kills from mid-long range against stragglers, which its gun is not best suited for. Going up against small groups or getting too close usually spells disaster.

The final anti-hog piece of the loadout jigsaw is the active camo. It’s far too easy to stand camo in the warthog’s (usually very predictable) path and stick it before it even knows you are there.

3- The PODs

The PODs work fine in 4v4, but in 8v8, they just cripple vehicle play. After 5 kills and a few assists, people are calling down splasers, rockets, incineration cannons etc. These spell instant doom for a Hog and further discourage the driver from aggressive driving.

in conclussion, i don’t think you can blame everyone being a bad driver. I’m a good driver and I can’t get a good run in the Hog any more.

Well said. I feel the same way and you pointed out the issues perfectly. Thanks.

You’re welcome

I think the biggest thing is, for both the gunner and driver, to take advantage of the warthog turret’s new accuracy. You don’t have to get in the enemy’s grill to get kills anymore. Your range is too far and power weapons are too plentiful for that.

In Halo 3, I found getting in mid-range and favoring your base’s side while circling enemies like a shark worked best. In Halo 4, the idea is the same, you just have to maintain more distance while flanking a little more.

I’m confused as to why the vehicles exist when there are so many power weapons. You’re walking into a coffin in this game.

12 year olds cant drive irl either

Honestly, I’ve once hit some guy with the front tyre of my hog and it flipped me >.>

… and no, I didn’t get a splatter :’(

Ever since Halo 2 I’ve been doing solo runs on every map in every vehicle to learn the best routes, the fastest shortcuts and the coolest tricks. Just a habit I guess, I used to practice my driving because I was at the time of Halo 2, my teams flag driver. I needed to know the maps and the best ways to get that flag home safely.

Such as turning my hog to one side so the flag carrier was shielded by the driver side of the vehicle. Sadly people don’t play like that anymore, that is if you can even get one of these online buffoons to drive you anywhere.

A fast intelligent driver used to win objective games. Stopping to allow for your gunner to hit targets, purposefully giving them a good line of sight for that kill…

Yeah, I miss vehicle orientated online play.

My BIG gripe last night was in BTB when twice I got in the 'hog on Vortex, and twice the gunner jumped off the gun underneath mid-base and left me a sitting duck… I mean WTF?
