Scrolling through the armors and visors outside of the battlepass and I always wondered why we have to wait a crazy amount of time before they come back into the store. Why are we keeping most armor pieces and visors “Vaulted” and gatekept? Why can’t we just simply have all available for purchase instead of everything being “vaulted?”
My guess is two things:
- Microsoft won’t let them or 343 is greedy and wants FOMO
- ran out of time before launch to implement one into the UI
Pessimistically, one might say the first one is correct. I personally think that the second is more true. A third option is that they just didn’t expect people to want one.
I agree. A F2P game that makes $ off their store and I cant buy items i want. Poor setup.
FOMO. That’s 100% it. They use FOMO because it works. This type of system gets used in almost every new FPS these days. Battlepasses, a FOMO store, and custom currency that could only be bought at specific amounts. They use them because they work to extract as much money as possible out of the player base. It’s scummy, and they could have implemented a store which didn’t rotate where you purchased things with real money, but they wanted to go the scummy route. Kind of funny considering all the talk they gave about not having any FOMO in their game, obviously that was a lie.
Don’t get me wrong, I 100% blame this on the higher ups. I’m sure people actually making the game wanted it to be as good as possible, but those folks don’t always get their way.
I agree with it being due to FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) – at least as an initial design choice. It’s how most cosmetic microtransactions are in FPS games.
Titanfall 2, on the other hand, let you buy it’s large and affordable cosmetic bundles at any time, and this was when every other FPS was using randomised lootboxes instead (I can never miss an opportunity to praise Titanfall 2).
343 may change this down the line, but it’s unlikely to be a priority. The shop would require a complete overall, and that’s even if they’re allowed to do so.
