Why are smurf accounts allowed by Microsoft?

I mean i can understand why people make them. They enjoy beating the crap out of people who aren’t as good and/or don’t have as much time to play as them. But… why does Microsoft allow them in the first place? It doesn’t help most of their customers enjoy their experience, it doesn’t help them make more money, and for the most people it makes games less fun. So why are they allowed?

I highly doubt MS was thinking of people misusing smurfs in Halo when they made that policy. They probably made it as an incentive for people to buy Gold accounts since numerous people can share one Xbox.

Money, son. It all boils down to money.
Well and legality and privacy terms, its kinda hard to tell if someone has a smurf account or if they just bought it for someone else…without, you know breaking a bunch of laws.

8 Games in a row against smurfs. Really destroying competitive ranking.

In a word?
Money
why wouldn’t Microsoft want one person to be paying for 2,3,4,5 or how ever many live accounts

Doesn’t work that way. If they have one account that has gold one their system, every other account has the perks of gold as well. That’s what I do with other accounts on my system that don’t have gold, same with everyonw I know with more than one account.

Did they change it?
in the past seperate gamer tags meant seperate accounts which means seperate live

Yup, it’s been this way for quite awhile now. Maybe since the Xbox One came out. I first noticed it around August last year.

Because not all aspects of online gaming can be policed so to speak. It’s online gaming toughen up a bit. Bad beats happen. It’s also almost impossible to prove “smurf” accounts. Let’s say some ones little brother who shares a account with his older brother who is really good. Let’s sat that little brother has an awesome game and does great. He can be accused of being a “smurf” when all it was was a really good game. People also need to take into account the Halo population isn’t huge right now so the matchmaking window has to be pretty wide to make games. Since 343 seems to be putting a lot on matchmaking speed they probably have the window open pretty wide.

I have 4 different accounts, mainly cause I’ve unlocked everything on 2 of them and one of them I let my friend use, and the current one is just to kinda hang out and chill, besides I usually stick to Super Fiesta and Firefight for matchmaking, and I stick to customs for the majority of my time.

Because no one cares. It’s not a big deal. I don’t do it because I don’t see the point. Let others do as they please. It’s only “ruining” things because people get there underwear in a bunch about it. My suggestion is let it go. lol

$$$

One of the reasons i dont play Slayer so much anymore. It’s truly sad and unfortunate.

Yep, so it actually brings in less money for MS since for example my whole family can have their own gamer tags under one gold account. In the 360 days everyone needed to buy an account.

i think it effects lower ranked players a lot more than higher (because why make a smurf to play high onyx and not get matches?) and for lower players it really does change the games, especially in slayer. when one team consistently has a level 2-5 player who goes 25-3 or something, thats a really hard defect to overcome. I’ve accepted my skill level as a gold-plat and I’m fine with that. its great when playing other gold-plats because its pretty even. but i also know someone who’s real account is an onyx is just a better player than i am and I’m outmatched. that guy who went 25-3 also probably killed me in 70% of our 1v1s, and when I’m going into a 1v1 knowing I’m gonna lose it makes me less likely to wanna play, which isn’t just bad for me but its bad for Halo (because I’m not the only one that happens to, and I keep playing anyways but others don’t). people will say git gud and playing against better people makes you better but first i don’t have time to practice enough to beat an onyx (and probably wouldn’t get there even if i did) and second, playing that big of a skill gap doesnt make you better it just makes you frustrated.

for the record i think i handle it pretty well. i created this thread mostly cuz i was wondering if there WAS some kind of advantage, not cuz i was salty. I enjoy playing H5 even when i get my butt handed to me, but i had a streak of several games in a row playing against some obvious smurf accounts to it made me curious.

this is why i was curious though. microsoft doesnt actually make more money when people create a smurf account. gold accounts can create as many accounts as they want for free. in a roundabout way they might, because that perk might convince more people to sign up for gold accounts i guess.

are there less smurfs in the arena playlist? or do you mean warzone is better?

Bingo you beat me to the answer haha

There is really no way to stop this, and the vast majority of Xbox One owners who take advantage of the multiple gold accounts per console are not doing so with the malicious intent of “smurfing”.

What do you propose?

Only allowing one gamertag with a paid Xbox live membership? Okay, so then smurfing would now be a pay to play scheme, where there are still smurfers, yet they are paying to do it. May cut down on it, but it will NOT get rid of it. So this seems like a bad route to go down, and would ultimate punish the majority of xbox live users who use the system they way Microsoft intended for us to do so.

I think the better route to go down, which I think could cut down (but not get rid of) on smurfing without punishing those who use the policy the way it was intended to be used, is to create the EXACT same ranked playlists but create social versions. Why? Because if I want to play slayer with my high school buddy who is ranked champion I am currently forced to either A) play a different gamemode than the one we both want to that way it is not ranked or B) play slayer with him and a bunch of players way above my skill level and get my -Yoink- pushed in. Something I would be cool with if it wasn’t ranked.

i agree with that first statement. i also would be OK with either of your proposed solutions. even something in the middle would be making someone provide a unique email address for each GT. its not charging extra and each player in a house should have a unique email address anyways, so its still allowing the Xbox to be used how its intended, but is at least a small barrier to creating an account without forcing someone to pay for it. (for the record, i WOULD feel better about playing a smurfer if I at least knew that they were having to pay extra to destroy me lol).

I was just saying this in another thread but i always worry about further dividing the population of H5 at this point. people already have trouble finding games, and there are so many good games coming out soon that i am anticipating H5 is gonna get hit pretty hard without further population division. i do think that if there was a really healthy population though, that a separate playlist would be the best solution
