So after seeing this video, I’m now fairly convinced that 343 has a hidden “rank” for players in social playlists. Why in the world was this ever an idea for social in the first place? You literally defeat the purpose of even calling BTB or anything else a social playlist.
So for people who haven’t seen the video, this person (Genesis Rider) has been experiencing issues with the matchmaking for BTB, major issues might I add. Several months ago, he couldn’t find a match on BTB when searching alone, even on expanded search settings (with exceptional internet) and even tweeted at 343 every day this problem continued occurring. Later on, Unyshek (Community Coordinator of 343) acknowledged this issue for the person in the video, allowing him to search normally after a week or so in calling out this issue. Now, the problem has come back again. Whenever he searches BTB for an extensive period of time, a message pops up; “UNABLE TO MATCH. There may not be enough players to support a game in this playlist. Please try a different playlist.” But then, when he switches to his secondary account for xbox, the game gives him a match in 5 seconds, even on focused search settings. What the heck?
I’m under the impression that social playlist has hidden ranks within the factors of searching for a match. Keep in mind that this person in the video got a champion rank during launch back when BTB was ranked in the game. already setting himself up for a frustrating experience in the long run. BTB is his only enjoyable playlist when searching alone (as he really doesn’t prefer 4v4 games), especially as a way to unwind after 40 hour work times per week.
Edit: Please resolve this issue by setting a time limit for how long players should search with their current hidden rank. If players cannot find a match within 5 minutes using the hidden rank, then loosen the search parameters so that higher skilled people can find lobbies quicker, even if it means matching against easier people. Players shouldn’t be locked out of a specific playlist just because they’re too good for the game.

And trump did 7/11, sorry anyways I get the feeling you’re WAY too deep into things. You’re a very curious person and I like that. But at the same time there’s a pt of secrets about 343 a lot of people should leave alone.
For the bronze and silver players. Disabling ranks in social would be hell on them, they would lose ever game, they wouldn’t do very, and probably other stuff that I can’t recall atm. It only benefits the top 51% of the skilled players since there would be more players worse than them as oppose to the amount of players better than them.

Really? When my friend is locked out of a playlist with this hidden rank, you think this is an issue that should be left alone because it would stir up too much controversy? I must wonder what you thought about the game’s underwhelming content at launch.

I think the only reason why that would be a common occurrence is because players party up in the game (which goes to show another factor that 343 needs to add within the search parameters). Even good players can’t carry a team of noobs (like Contra in BTB), and this rank feature of the social playlists shouldn’t be functioning as strictly as this.

Personally I find it fine. I get games, which is important. I play with and against people who do good and people who do bad every game. Which seems fairly even to me. Parties have been a complaint on the forums since day one so I doubt that’ll ever change.

I don’t really care for the games content, I just play. Though I do have some issues against it, I don’t complain (not saying you’re complaining) because I know 343 won’t do anything, I love their staff, hate their hearing. I didn’t even care about Halo 2’s ending to be honest. But I get what you’re saying.

So you’re going to disregard this player’s experience of BTB currently? When your type of experience in BTB isn’t consistent among ALL players that play it, there’s a problem. If you were in the same shoes as him, you would not be as inconsiderate.

Probably an attribute of 343 that will never be solved unfortunately. Sometimes I wonder if they even look at the matchmaking feedback forum in this website, because there’s a bit to fix.
The “social” in this game isn’t even social.
I play the exact same people in “social” that I do in ranked.
I just don’t see the point in these playlists existing. If they’re not going to be actual social lists with mixed bag matchmaking, then just make them ranked. You cant relax in “social”.

Btb usually goes 1 guy with 22-1 with a 3-15 while the other team would go 20-5 with a 6-12. Usually.
What can I say on consistency? I never get the exact same score every single game for the 2000+ games I’ve played.

It’s a seriously short-minded system to be honest. I don’t see how 343 can’t comprehend the meaning of social at this point.

Luckily for people who don’t like loose MM in social, there is ranked with tight MM. That is the beauty of ranked and social. It gives choice.
H5 is the only game I can think of that uses tight skill MM in it’s unranked lists. Clearly the system works better than H5’s system.

When doubles came out I was excited to play on some fun, community created maps with my brother. The plan was to just casually run around while we talked and caught up on life.
NOPE
After two games all we got was super sweat fests vs onyx/champs.
3 games later we gave up and played blops 3. Which uses mixed bag MM and provides casual experience. God forbid we thought we could play casually in a SOCIAL playlist in H5.
Sorry, but social would be ruined if they remove the hidden ranks. There is indeed hidden ranks even in social. It’s always been like that, even back in h3. The purpose to to respectively put people of the same or relatively close in skill to match each other. Like another poster said, if you scrap the ranks, lower tier players will only lose even more enjoyment out of btb, griffball, ect ect. The top players don’t have any reason to complain, it is what it is, not everyone can be top dog which is why higher ranks take longer to find games. You say “imagine being in their shoes” but in reality you just flip flop the position to where another group loses enjoyment out of it. From my perspective a “real” social experience is one not giving a -Yoink- who they match up vs nor would they be bothered if they win or lose, but not everyone sees it that way. Even right now you see people upset about “tryhards” using fake accounts or playing in social playlists and ruining the fun, removing the hidden ranks will just make it that much worse.
Ill agree with another poster, it’s awesome that you’re curious and explore the things of halo, but some things are just better left alone, and this is one of them.

I did and I don’t have much to say on it, I get it in groups and solo, so it’s not just solo. Most of the time it occurs when I’m on at odd hours (when no one is playing) or when my internet sucks.

Why exactly should there be tight restrictions on matchmaking in a social playlist? Like Attack Sanctum mentioned, if people don’t enjoy the loose matchmaking in social, they can still play ranked to match those in similar skill (both for skillful and relaxing experiences). There should be a CHOICE in how you want to play your matches and how the game should match you. Sure you might get stomped against players in social unfortunately, but that is unavoidable in any playlist. There are many things 343 can address in matchmaking to help preserve the casual audience in social playlists without having to unofficially ban skillful players from said playlist.
Let’s be real: the only reason we have “social” right now is that the geniuses in charge of Arena playlist management thought everything should be be ranked, as clearly shown by the launch situation. When it turned out, as anyone with a functioning brain would know, that people don’t WANT ranked FFA Rockets, they hacked together the quickest, easiest illusion of social possible: a single boolean value that toggles the rank display. As per usual, it’s a poor compromise between what 343 apparently wants and what the community actually wants. Which is why little Jimmy, the AR master, can proudly display his highest rank attained of Gold 5 in Grifball.
And now, of course, we have “social” doubles, despite the fact that everyone asking for doubles actually wants it ranked. And they’re “looking into” making it ranked as if anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together doesn’t know that it already IS ranked. It’s just hidden. I just don’t understand how things work at that studio…
