Why are most of the maps made for vertical travel?

I understand Halo 5 has advanced mobility but why are all the maps made for it? I’m fine with clamber if it’s used to help climb walls but there’s no reason to add random pillars just for fun.

You answered your own question, to showcase game mechanics that were new to halo. Also a lot of said pillars and structures can be used for cover or to an attacker’s advantage.

The game featured new movement mechanics, it would be foolish to have them be obsolete in multiplayer. Maps were designed to leverage all the abilities Spartans have.

I don’t think any parts of maps were ever pointlessly added In for the sake of it. If you have examples please share

It’s not about making abilities obsolete, it’s about having abilities as an option not a requirement. Just because we can sprint and clamber doesn’t mean we should be forced to do it. I think to many newer games add cool abilities only to force players to use them. Mass Effect Andromeda was another example if this. I loved the gameplay and the thrusters, but it became tiring to constantly climb levels and thruster to new spots. Abilities shouldn’t force people to use them, they should grant the player more choices. Sprint has the same problems. Many Halo 5 maps were stretched to accommodate sprint. What’s the point of moving faster if the maps are now larger? Sprint should allow the player to cross the map in less time

Everything you do is optional. You’re not forced to do anything.

The only ability I use is sprint, thrust and clamber. The other ones basically don’t exist to me. There’s no scenario where I feel forced to use any of them.

As for larger maps? I feel like arena maps have probably gotten smaller if anything. If you’re referencing Warzone maps the yeah they’re going to be bigger as they’re meant to hold a higher player capacity. If you want to move even faster, use Advanced Thrusters…

Maybe I’m failing to see your point but I feel as if saying you’re “forced” to do this or that is just a bit extreme.

Watch this video and you’ll get a better understanding of why people think the abilities are total gimmicks.

I can see the point in this video and I understand it. As for all abilities being a total gimmick, seems a bit harsh. It only addresses clamber and sprint, arguably they are the good points against them being in the game.

For me, I’m just not very fussed about if they are in the game or not.

“Forced” might be a too strong of a word. Advanced mobility is heavily encouraged. Look at all the maps. They’re all full of walkways and pillars. Imagine if Guardian was made for Halo 5. I’m certain that the ledge on Overshield tower would be higher, forcing Clamber. Now I’m not against advanced mobility but I am against making maps Spartan Jungle Jims just for advertising abilities. Imagine if Jetpacks are built in to Halo Infinite. Now imagine that every map has 8 levels just to advertise Jetpacks as part of gameplay.

A thoughtful and well designed map is made to fully make use of as much of the game’s mechanics as possible, but the better the map the more tastefully the mechanics are encouraged and utilized by the map (this is more or less true for what ever game you playing). so yes the maps were obviously designed with the abilities in-mind as it should be.

so

  1. that video is stupid and is simply a bad argument for classic vs new because it uses map design as half of its argument which means little since of cause the map design will reflect the games mechanics and attempt to make full use of them.
  2. maps weren’t necessarily stretched for sprint, there can be many different reasons to enlarge or shrink and may more ways to approach an issue with the map, also i doubt sprint alone was ever reason enough.
  3. i do think 343 may have been just a bit to aggressive with how much they wanted to emphasize halo 5’s advanced moment in the map design but id say its better to have gone a bit to far then to have not gone far enough because running the issue of adding new mechanics only to have them underutilized is pretty bad id say.
