Why are all Halo vehicles named after an animal?

Why are all Halo vehicles named after an animal or an apparition( excluding Prometheans) I mean look at this: Mantis, Warthog, Scorpion, Mongoose, Wasp, Banshee, Wraith, and Ghost. Answer in detail. Sorry I didnt put all of the vehicles there are too many

I would guess that this is mainly due to naming rules that Bungie has used when naming the vehicles and that the usage of these rules has been maintained throughout the years.

They are named after animals for their appearance and ability on the battlefield. The Scorpion tank looks like a Scorpion, the Wasp is nimble just like its animal counterpart, and a Pelican can carry a a lot in its beak/gullet. You get the idea. Not to mention that humans have named military vehicles after animals for well over a century.

As for the Covenant vehicles, well I would have said that they are named as such because humans have always had a fear of the supernatural. In some cases, the names are appropriate as the Banshee wails whenever it banks.

Some of them actually look like an animal. For example the Hornet has big wings like a Hornet, the Wasp has long wings and both of these things can fly. The Warthog has tusk in the front like an actually Warthog and the Scorpion resembles an actually Scorpion tail especially with the tracks.

But they you have some vehicles that ignore that scheme, Colossus, Cyclops, and Gremlins are human vehicles that don’t follow that naming scheme. Same with the Shortsword, Longsword, and Boardsword.

I always thought that the Cyclops was aptly named due to the cockpit being in the centre, the “eye” as it were.

Yeah basically like what he said. It doesn’t hold very accurate though, the warthog looks more like a puma.

The names are inaccurate to the appearances as well. The Warthog, for example. It doesn’t look like a large pig. It looks like a large cat of some sort…like a puma.

What I meant by that is that it isn’t named after an animal.

UNSC naming convention is for animals, its what they compare them to, The UNSC name Covie vehicles after supernatural entities such as types of ghosts(spectre, phantom etc) Then the banshee is an Irish which famous for its scream, among many others, some Covie vehicles are also named after insects, such as the Tick and Locust, mainly because of their appearance or role

I personally think it’s a really nice touch that they named all of the vehicles after animals/apparitions. I especially love the latter.
