Why am I lagging so bad in Halo 4??

On average my download speed is 35.4 mbps and upload speed is 3.87 mbps. Ping always below 25. My 360 is hardwired into my router… So why is it that every time I play Halo 4 I experience incredibly terrible lag. Is anyone else experiencing this? And is their something else I can do to solve this problem? I really want to get my H4 on but this lag is ridiculous.

Do you live outside the United States?

No, I live in Michigan.

Your connection speed is very good, much better than mine.

Have you configured Port Forwarding on your router and given your xbox a static IP? This will help…

But the main problem with Laggy games in Halo 4 is:

Due to Halo 4 Search Parameters, you can no longer search for “Preferred Good Connection” like you could in REACH.

343, says you don’t need this because matchmaking does this automatically.

This is crap, because I play with full parties, all Aussies (including me), and yet we are matched with other people from other countries. And if the other country has host, then 90% of the time, this will be a laggy game.

Also, Halo 4 having a very low population, does not help in finding players nearby giving you a better connection.

Now in REACH, this was not a problem. You could choose “Preferred Good Connection” and I would always have a game with other Aussies or New Zealanders. Chances of a laggy game was about 5%.

This is a big difference.

And is most likely affecting you as well.

Yes, I have given my 360 a static IP and configured my router to port forward. I went looking for a custom search setting in Halo 4 a few days ago and found that there was none. That’s disappointing that the game is just going to lag on me. Thanks for the info though.

If you play split-screen, get used to it. Every other halo has fixed this issue, but not Halo 4.

Because you’re playing Halo 4, it’s the laggiest game on Xbox Live by far.

> Because you’re playing Halo 4, it’s the laggiest game on Xbox Live by far.

Have you played Halo 3? It is by far worse. Note: Halo 4 is pretty bad, although most of the time I blame it on my connection. At its peak my download speed is 1.5Mb/s, and lately it has been as low as 0.3Mb/s :S

Halo 3, a 6 year old game.
Halo 4, a 7 month old game.

sshh you can’t speak bad about Halo 3 remember

Anyway I like in the UK and don’t tend to lag

I experience noteworthy lag maybe once out of every twenty games or so. It’s not really an issue for me.

I got the same specs as you topicstarter and i and alot of my friends have also alot lag. First it was like 3 out of 10 games that were laggy. Now its 8 out of 10. Its insane!

And when i play battlefield 3… i dont have any lag at all. Not even if i play with and against West USA (im from holland).

A friend of my said that this lag startert with the CSR ranking… i think he’s right.

How do you port forward to get a static ip on the Xbox?

Battlefield has dedicated servers, which means it isn’t as obvious to tell when you are lagging if you don’t know what you are looking for. But there is lag in Battlefield, it just isn’t the same as Halo 4.
Lag in battlefield is normally when you are shot around corners (client side hit registration) and when your hit registration is off. Rubberbanding is possible if you are in servers too far away from your location.

Your friend is wrong, it has nothing to do with CSR. It is due to Halo 4’s netcode and the low population. I’ve been lagging since December, November was fine for me. But some of my friends have been lagging since day 1.

What is the actual age of your router/modem, cable type(s)/length(s) and age, age of Xbox. etc?

I was facing some very frustrating gameplay for the last year of Reach and first few months of Halo4. I had everything for an enjoyable experience and even after changing routers, I still had the problem of latency high/lagy games.
I swapped out the modem (brand new one with late 2012 up to date tech) and BAM! My shots/hits were registering much more properly.

I kid you not I could shot red reticle and not get a hit many times. That changed with the modem fix.

You don’t lag? Tell me your secret!

Of course it does since the game also has to match the players based somewhat on their True Skill and with the low population all these matchmaking restrictions will be bad for the game.
Most games these days only use social playlist settings, such as BF, CoD( not Blops 2) and doesn’t have True Skill or a ranked playlist to consider when putting players in a match. It purely goes by connection quality, region of the players and not skill.

With that said Halo doesn’t really have a good system either when selecting Host, that Host history crap they use have never been good. Even with a population of well over 300k and you still get to play a lot of matches with Red Bar Host.

Not sure where you get your router info from but you don’t want to be using a static IP.

You want an open NAT if you want best results. Strict or Moderate NAT’s doesn’t effect your gaming Ping, but it might mean your only being connected to bad servers.

Firstly, take off static IP. Set it to automatic on your xbox. Reset your router, then turn on your xbox again and do a connection test.

On Halo 4 you can check your NAT under your network options. If this is still not set to Open, you will need to open your ports.

Google your router and xbox live port forwarding, you will no doubt find someone who will run through the steps for you.

Hope you get it sorted.

Darknal

Trueskill =/= CSR

I found this game to be horrible if you live outside the USA.
It’s a freaking handicap, it’s really bad in Europe.
