[SPOILER ALERT]
If you don’t want the game ruined if you haven’t already completed it, I suggest to leave this topic.
I don’t think Cortana is dead. Just gather the clues and small hints. We know how this works. Composer, fragments, the fact that she was cloned from a human brain, librarian talking about turning people into AI and AI into people. Think about it. They would also lose alot of Halo fans if she was really gone. She’s too important…
Also, the Didact. Remember what the Liberian said about the composer? The Composer will give immortality to whoever uses it? And on the last level, the Didact falls into the Composer, so could he still be alive?
But overall, i personally think Halo 4 was a brilliant game and is in my Top 3 Halo’s
I sort of lean to ‘our’ Cortana being dead. If 343 follows the information that was put out in Red vs Blue Freelancers about AI Rampancy and AI Fragmentation then what Cortana did was fragment herself into multiples in order to attack the composer system, there would have been the logical Cortana, the hateful Cortana, the carefree Cortana, and so on, and I think the Cortana that spoke to Cheif at the end was ‘nurturing’ Cortana that Halsey created to basically give John 117 a companion and confidante.
Having said all all that, it only applies if they haven’t decided to put a big spin on this because there are some things you hear and see in the campaign that could have been put there as set ups for a return.
There is the statement Cortana makes about how they might replace her with another copy of the original AI but it wouldnt actually be her, there is the conversation about her being the only AI that was ‘cloned’ from a human being, and there is the Halsey log file you can find in the Dawns wreckage in Reqium that talks about the AI she worked on that seemed ‘evolved’.
I think that the AI companion of John 117 is going to be replaced somehow, but I don’t know if in the story its going to be the original Cortana, or replaced in another way.
They NEED to bring “our” Cortana back, seriously. I don’t know about everyone else on here but I am more attached to Cortana than I am chief. She is the one whose voice you hear more than anyone elses, shes the one who guides you when you don’t know where your going, and she is the one who I honestly feel closer to.
Everyone likes the chief, hes cool and doesn’t talk much and all that badass stuff, but Cortana is the one you get more attached to, at least I do.
343, please don’t get rid of the cortana we know and love, its not hard to bring her back come up with some way.
I think that for the next game it would be interesting to how the chief handles missions with out Cortana, maybe reveal more about who he is and how he thinks. Then have the librarian or something reveal a small tidbit that Cortana may be alive. And I think it would be cool to see the chief possibly jeopardize missions to get Cortana back. Really show what lengths he would go to to get her back.
I dunno, I’m just thinking out loud, but 343 better not do away with Cortana, that would make me a sad panda.

Yeah, I’m the same way. I love Cortana more than Chief. I got really heartbroken at the end and I cried. She will be back, 343i would be stupid if they didn’t. Just my opinion.
If I’m honest with myself, I’d have to say the same. Cortana means more to me than the Chief in many respects.
I guess that’s probably to do with the fact that, as an FPS, you are the Chief, for all intents and purposes (Heck, he never really said much either in the first three games). And because of that, Cortana is more ‘your’ companion and guide through the story. ‘You’ become attached to her being there, keeping ‘you’ company through ‘your’ journey.
As has been said, I’d like ‘our’ Cortana back.
Ending their very first Halo game on such a depressing note didn’t really impress me that much, to be quite frank… -_-
no way she is dead. chief and cortana are like mario and Luigi, r2d2 and c 3P0 etc…theyre a dynamic duo and it woudlnt be wise for 343 to kill her off in their first stand alone game. shes out there, somewhere, her data still computes <3
My belief that she actually died just comes from what I saw her do to herself and the baseline information about AI’s and rampancy and so on, most of which I got from watching the freelancer episodes.
The AI’s don’t run out of data storage room, they think themselves to death, the more they think the faster they think, the faster they think the more they think and so it snowballs. The AI’s finally reach a point where the program basically tears itself apart.
I think what Cortana did at the end was basically fracture herself into segments, like those scientists did the AI Alpha in freelancers.
How she could come back from that I don’t know. Not saying that it isn’t going to happen but it doesn’t really follow with what I understand of the processes but oh well, it could happen.
Yeah I was more fond of Cortana that any other character in the Halo series to date, and personally I think Chief is going to fly into socio-pathic pieces if he doesnt get a steady companion and thats not a man I’d like to see climb a clock tower.
One thing to remember about the entire Halo series though, even back to the first one, is the unspoken reality that in war there are casulties, some we like, some we don’t, some we get to know, and some we don’t remember, and even some that we are totally shocked when we see them go down.
How many people here that played Halo 3 were completely shocked when Sgt. Johnson got blown away by Spark? I’ve never talked to anyone that said they saw that coming but it happened and he didn’t magically reappear as a clone.
There is one option open and that is Metastability. The AI is no longer bound to a single system but have become true independent people. Only one other AI in the Halo setting has achieved that state and it is Mendicant Bias. 343i didn’t need to kill off Cortana to make the game more dark/mature or to build a deeper emotional connection to her. The entire game was about her imminent mortality and how they both coped with that. And at the end she could have emerged as a fully realized person having passed through Rampancy.
But what does 343i do? They kill her off. It makes no sense for them to do so. The questions John would ask himself are the same. “If Cortana can become more than just an AI, am I more than just a weapon?” same damn thing.
But I have preached my stance on this in multiple threads and I should really stop. Though I agree I had a deeper attachment to Cortana than I did to the Chief.
I’m of the mindset that we will either get a new Cortana or a new AI, and that she (or he) will help us on our journey to not only defeat the Didact, but also to find and bring back Cortana V1. At first, the Chief won’t be as talkative as we heard him in H4, but will eventually warm up to the new AI, only for said AI to sacrifice itself to bring back Cortana. I don’t think she’ll become a human until the end of the trilogy.
Johnson was a cool character and I was genuinely sorry to see him go out with a bang. But he was never on the same level of familiarity with the player that Cortana is/was. For me, the Chief and Cortana are Halo. They are the two main characters through which we have experienced the story journey.
As an aside, I really wouldn’t base any speculation on what Rooster Teeth are doing. They are certainly not a canon source of Halo universe info, just a very successful sideline fan addition to the franchise.
Not sure if this is also just an attempt at 343i to get people to remain talking about their game. By -Yoink!- off a majority of their fan base for their first game they keep attention on it longer than if they had given a more logical, and just as emotional ending.

To my mind it would have been quite depressing enough if Chief had had to hand over Cortana at the end to ONI for final data analysis and disposal. But at least that would have left me with more hope that she might survive.
Seriously. They could have had Halsey take Cortana back from him, which would have completed the circle. She was the only person to whom John would have surrendered Cortana. And it would have given seriously emotional impact to the end of the game as well, given what Cortana meant to them both. Plus, it would have fitted in with what John promised Cortana too, even if there was little hope of saving her.
I still can’t help but remember what Johnson says to the Chief with his dying breath at the end of Halo 3 though.

didnt that forerunner say chief was the key between human and digital fusion or something? maybe a part of her is inside chief and he doesnt know it yet? well i hope so she cant just go like that i was really upset about tbh. 343i bring her back immediately!!! :’(
I am not sure if they will or not. I mean it would seriously piss off the fan base. Not quite the same impact as ME3 had, but it is still pretty galvanizing especially with the other issues people have with the game.
I would love to see a metastable Cortana in a physical shell with John and they go on to create a new breed of Humanity capable of holding the Mantle.
people are missing the fact that the Librarian specifically says she is part of the plan too, her existence was PLANNED. Halsey herself in a terminal recording says Cortana was likely to rebel to her 7 years lifespan. Need I also remind you that the didact survived…if he did why not Cortana?
The initial vid - Halsey being interrogated, saying they intend to replace John.
Cortana saying John may have another incarnation, but it still wouldn’t be her.
Halseys comments on how there was something different with Cortana that might allow her to overcome rampancy.
Halo has always been about the long hard fight to overcome the odds.
And lastly… don’t make a promise to a girl you can’t keep.
If it is the end of Cortana
There is an empty pit that resides in every true Halo fan.
It could be a reality, it really isn’t any less tragic then what has already occurred.
Think of Reach… the Spartans… Sam - James Noble both Keyes Sarge… even Foehammer.
I don’t want to think further on it really… I wan’t the anxiety of not knowing.
My expectation is that somehow … someway … I will have Hope, I will BELIEVE!
