Eric Nylund is a God when it comes to Halo fiction; never took Halo seriously or played the game until I read the books; his military terminology is on point and they way he brings you in the Halo world is awesome. I am currently on my third Halo book first Contact and I look forward to seeing his name on future covers. So How many Halo books have you guys read and who is your favorite author
Eric Nylund is fantastic. After reading his stuff, it makes you appreciate the campaigns that much more.
Eric Nylund is my favourite author, but I liked Greg Bear’s Forerunner Trilogy better than any of Nylund’s books if that makes any sense.
I actually really liked Karen Travis. I know that it’s not the popular opinion, but I thought kilo five was amazing.
Greg Bear
Out of the novels I have read, nothing comes close to the majesty of the Forerunner Saga by Greg Bear. An amazing set of novels that all Halo authors should read and take into consideration when developing and writing their own stories. The novel excels in capturing the majestic nature and strength of the Forerunners, while also displaying their weaknesses as a people and a space faring civilisation. It introduces flaws, and struggles into the Forerunners, something we haven’t had explored in any prior fiction.
Of course, this is entire opinion base and others may enjoy things like Last Light, or Contact Harvest, or even Glasslands and the writing styles present in those particular novels.
I wish I could forget everything thing about Eric Nylund’s contribution to the Halo Universe, so that I could read it again with wonder and amazement.
I think all of the authors have been good, personally I haven’t read a bad Halo book yet. And yes that means I did like Kilo-Five, I’d personally place it above the Forerunner Saga, sorry Greg.

I really enjoyed Traviss’s work in Kilo-5. She also did a terrific job with her Star Wars Republic Commando novels.
I don’t have a favorite. Each author that I have read brings something amazing to the Halo lore. Be it Nylund, Traviss, Bear, Staten, Dietz: they all do a great job.
Greg Bear.
Nylund did a pretty awesome job in Ghosts of Onyx though. Probably my favorite read pre-Bear.
Nylund is my favorite, Reach and Onyx are my two favorite novels
Troy Denning won me over big time with Last Light.

I just started it, I am looking forward to it, but so far so good.
Honestly I have a hard time choosing…Nylund of course (especially for Ghosts of Onyx, still my favorite novel).
Greg Bear, sure.
The rest are all just sorta equal. Traviss kinda let me down though…mostly with how she handled Halsey.
Nylund is king when it comes to Halo lore.
He even managed to piece together the lore train wreck that was Halo: REACH when he wrote the Halsey’s Journal. Good on him.
Personally I really like Traviss’ novels.
I feel like she did a really good job of getting in to the characters heads. And say what you will about how she handled Halsey, that’s as much 343’s doing as hers.

I personally think she (Traviss) wrote the worst Halo novel of all time in Glasslands. It was obvious that she did little or no research of the Halo universe prior to writing it. She knew next to nothing about the characters. She knew next to nothing about the Spartans. SII or SIII’s. An example of her complete lack of Halo knowledge you ask? How about the stupidity of Lucy punching Halsey in the face and only bloodying her nose?. Lucy is a Spartan III and while maybe not quite as strong as an SII, she is still an augmented Spartan. Halsey would be dead after getting clocked in the face by ANY Spartan. Just one of the many errors Traviss made. And as the book is a sequel to Ghost’s, it should have been as least as good. Truly, 343 should have asked Eric Nylund to write that series too as KT’s attempt is a big fat fail.
Nylund. Followed by Staten, then Shirley. Bear comes after Shirley, but only because I like more action in what I read. Greg Bear did a fantastic job, but the other three authors put a lot of action and less walking and talking about things then Bear did.
