Painful as in physical. Carter. He was bleeding all over the cockpit of the Pelican.
Painful emotional… I think Cat… She got killed mid-sentence. She had no idea what was coming and was still planning ahead for the future.
Jorge, Carter, Emile and Six have all had time to make their peace with their deaths. Jorge died thinking he was a hero and chose his fate. Carter died to buy Emile and Six more time, and he went out with a bang. Emile went out in a stupid way by resorting to his STUPID melee weapon vs a freaking Elite Elite. Forgot their rank. They were high up though. Six went out because Six stupidly sacrificed himself and he/she were the only ones left to do it. I felt sick in the last mission, and seeing that cutscene after my health had dwindled down too far. But the character had made the choice. Cat never got that choice. She is the only one who got murdered perhaps against her will.

Agree with carter, but if CAT didnt see it coming has no regrets, everyone else died for the cause, but 6 finish the job and died alone, i think that´s painfull.
Both physically and emotionally, definitely Carter. Everyone knew he wouldn’t make it. He didn’t even have any illusions that he was saving Reach. There was still a hard fight ahead.

The first one pulled him out of the Onager, and he responded by shooting it in the face with his shotgun. It wasn’t until the second one (were he had no other option) that the kukri came out. (Bungie was apparently obsessed with neck-stabbing.)
Zealots, by the way. It still took two of them to kill a single SPARTAN.
Of note: Kat died instantly because she’d just put her helmet on in the elevator, and didn’t have her shields up. (Which would’ve saved her from a needle rifle, definitely.) Oh, and Six also takes out that guy, the Field Marshal. The Covenant definityely took heavy losses in that conflict as well.
carter was a bloody mess most likely in the most pain before he kamikazed the pelican jorge blew up instant death kat 1 shot killed instant death emile energy sword through his body but got beat up a little bit but not much, six about the same as emile but a little worse so id got w/ carter
Six had to die completely alone with no chance of escaping the doomed planet, and he was completely surrounded by enemies. Ever since the Pillar of Autumn took of he probably knew he would die soon and would only be able to delay his death at most. Knowing that you would die no matter what is very painful in my opinion.
Emile or Six. The rest had a somewhat quicker death
Got to be Noble 6 the amount of elites at the end is insane, defo a hyper lethal vector
