Who did you like more, Locke or Chief?

This isn’t a versus question. Chief wins the fight, hands down. My question is… did anybody like Locke better? Was there something about him that made you go “Yes! All of this in my Halo!” Cause to me… he’s just a brick that the UNSC picks up and throws at their problems.

And I mean don’t get me wrong, Chief is pretty much a brick too, but throughout the games he shows some modicum of personality. He gives sarcastic quips, he does things that reflect that under all the armor, augmentations, and psychological trauma, there is still a human in there. Locke just doesn’t. He’s never shown anything but “stoic duty driven soldier” even in his expanded media. He seems (to me) completely devoid of personality.

I have come to realize these threads have gotten old for people, but I need to satisfy my own curiosity. It’s not about who’s tougher, or who was more fun to play, what I want to know is who did you like, and why?

  • My answer is chief he had cool one liners but locke is a no because in the campaign buck asked him a question and locke just stared off into space and never answered then the cutscene ended and no character development happened with blue time and Osiris

I don’t even think this is a question😂

I think the better question is, does anyone even like Locke?

Personally, I think he needs improvement. Maybe dial back on the reservedness, which I guess is difficult since that’s how ONI trained him. He definitely has potential though.

To be honest, I didn’t really care for Chief until Halo 4. Locke may not be much, but he’s definitely had a faster rate of character development than Chief (considering Nightfall). Hopefully he opens up a bit more by Halo 6 (yes, I think he should be in Halo 6. Shoe-horning in a reason to scrap him from the games would be a lazy move).

Chiefs changed a little to much for me, and locke is still fresh…

I choose secret option C

Arbiter

I like Locke as a character, but not the way he was written in Halo 5

But I prefer Chief, just cause well…he’s goddam Master Chief

If Locke actually developed as a character, I’d probably like him. Sadly, that wasn’t the case in Halo 5.

Either way, Chief is better.

…It’s not exactly fair to pick favorites when Chief has about five games plus a bunch of books to add to his character, while Locke only has what generally seems to be considered a lackluster TV series and an even more lackluster campaign behind him.

Yeah, but Chief shows more personality in Halo CE than Locke does in Halo 5 AND Nightfall.

People will crucify me for this, but Locke. Not because he’s so much better, but because Chief is just so bad in Halo 5. I mean Chief only shows a real human-like personality in Halo CE and Halo 4, but Halo 5 is just towers above the rest in how bad it is.

First Chief mission, we go a station where ONI did some shady -Yoink- on Jackals and was trying to weaponize a bio-weapon. Even Fred starts to question ONI. Chief? “We don’t know and we don’t ask.” Shuts down that entire plot point then and there.

Second Chief mission. Kelly and Linda start to ask Chief about his relationship with Cortana, what it felt like to have an AI. Chief said it was different, and they ask to elaborate. Chief’s response? “No.” Shuts down that entire plot point then and there. Wasn’t this supposed to be Chief’s family? The one group of people he can open up to more than anyone else, people who’ve been with him in the Spartan II program? Why is he giving them the cold shoulder? Why is the huge character development from Halo 4 just being thrown away here?

Third Chief mission is really more on Cortana’s fault than Chief, but no one seems to care what Chief wants. Cortana wants Chief to come to Meridian, Chef apparently has to do so. Cortana wants Chief to go to Genesis and wander for hours? Chief doesn’t have a choice. Chief doesn’t want to be in a forced peace under giant robot Plasma Pistols? Don’t care, Cortana’s gonna put you in a Cryptum and even lie to you to get you in there. Chief thinks negatively of Dr. Halsey? Too bad, he sees her at the end of the game.

It’s like no one cares what Chief wants.

This is how I feel:

  • Pre Halo 4 + 5: Chief. I hate how 343 handled his character, basically shoving the fans emotions down his throat, making him act drastically out of character. This really shows in Halo 5. So I must say that as of the past few titles I prefer Locke over the Master Chief. As far as 343 Chief is concerned with me, maybe Del Rio had a point in Halo 4… which pains me to say because I really don’t like him at all.

Honestly, Agent Locke could have had a much better character development but I still like the concept of him! I also like his armor as well!

The problem with the question is the way the campaign turned out. Did 343i have other ideas of which way to go in the story? Most likely, but this is what we ended up with so it’s not a fair representation of either.

I didn’t like Locke, but maybe because there wasn’t enough of a backstory and it felt like he was the antagonist to me.

I prefer 117, I hope Halo 6 is a full on Master Chief game, not just half of it.

I liked Locke (No-where near as much as Chief) but my problem was with his fire team and implementation, for example, Buck is an awesome character, he brings nostalgia to old ODST players, has a well-developed story and is a proven combat veteran as he was initially offered to join the Spartan 3 program. In my opinion maybe, just maybe he should have been considered as the leader of Fireteam Osiris (Not the main character!) maybe with Locke being a bit more ruthless and mysterious member of the team perhaps like Noble 6 or Emile in Reach. I’m rambling now but my point is that Locke is a good character, however, the way he was suddenly implemented as someone who is almost a match for Master Chief (Someone with supposedly unknown powers given to him by the librarian) and the lack of any kind of emotional attachment or interest to his story I personally have for him, leads me to believe Chief is by far the better, more fleshed out character. (Yes the games do also portray Chief as a bit of a “brick” however if you delve deeper than the games you suddenly learn much more about him and the amazing story that leads him to the events of Halo 5 Guardians)

Yes, the absolute worst way to introduce and develop the main character lol.

I was going to say the same thing xD.

The locke shown in the trailers looked awesome. But as we all know the trailers we’re misleading and false-advertised. Locke could of been badass. COULD OF. I wish I could like him, but 343 had a chance and ruined it. Nothing can change Halo 5’s story.

Locke is alright. I don’t get why some complain about “character development”, which Halo never really had, and 343 actually does better than original games. Did no one watch Nightfall? Locke had a whole movie for development. Then the other Spartans where in books and/or previous games (Buck in Halo:ODST). I can see why most don’t like Locke but he is just the type that puts accomplishing the mission above all else. But of course I like Chief better but that doesn’t mean I don’t like Locke either.

The thing is for locke and the other team members except chief is you have to do your homework to learn about them as you said you have to watch nightfall to get to know locke . You also have to read new blood, shadow of intent and more to understand halo 5 and most if its charachters.

I don’t care that I’m the minority, team Locke all the way!
