Ok, I get who Blue team is, but when did Buck and Locke become Spartans? I don’t get it. I just watched nightfall, kinda meh, but Locke is cool. Watched Spatan Ops cinematics, which were super nice and interesting even though I didn’t even know it existed on the mcc. Press Y to watch videos? Huh? Talk about missable. I’m sure I can google this and will, but scouring the halo channel hasn’t really shed much light on this. I’m all for expanded media but if your core content, ie the games, doesn’t really explain it, I think that’s a bit of a narrative fail even though I like what they’ve done and am enjoying the campaign so far. I guess I’d buy it more if Nightfall and Odst didn’t even exist. Just makes it confusing. What am I missing here?
It’s not your fault you don’t know. The game failed to provide background on any squadmates whatsoever.
Here you are. Spoilers ahead.
BUCK: In Halo: New Blood (A book) The Rookie gets killed by Innies and Dutch drops out to get married. Romeo, Buck, and Mickey go on to be Spartan IVs and they go on several missions. Mickey eventually betrays them, and gets the living crap beaten out of him by Buck. Buck then asks to be part of a team which he isn’t leading. He gets put with Osiris. We don’t know what happens to Romeo.
LOCKE: After the events on Alpha Shard, ONI recruits him into the Spartan IV program, he then forms Fireteam Osiris and hunts down the Chief.
There you go.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll check back after I finish the campaign just in case. I’m pretty close I think.
Edit: Someone beat me to it.
its not like theres a Full book about Bucks change from ODST to Spartan or anything.

I’m sure there are many books I have zero interest in reading(though I’m sure they are possibly well written). Expanded universe is fine if they never introduced characters in a core game imo. At the very least provide a mass effect style codex(maybe this exists and I haven’t found it?) with some background on wtf happened and why. I even watched that halo5 primer but it didn’t really say much.
So, without reading any extra material, but watching the halo anime disc, playing all the games including reach, halo wars, and odst, watching the Spartan ops, nightfall, and several videos on the halo channel, my guess is you volunteer for the New Spartan program or are chosen based on military record and then they stretch you out until you’re 7feet tall?
i feel like I’m pretty well versed in what the halo universe is all about, but I’m not that into it where I want to be reading books about it or even seek them out. I don’t mind that the universe is so expansive and I like that, but it’s all based on games. The games should always be clear on their own.
Buck became a Spartan in New Blood, honestly I wish the Rookie hadn’t been killed, I had fun playing ODST
Whatever happened to noble team? I thought there was 1 survivor?

Jun-A266, the sniper, is a recruiter for the SPARTAN-IV program. He recruited Buck and they had a good ol’ chat remembering Noble Six.
Thanks for the summary gods holy fist. That story sounds terrible, so tired of stories where the military people turn on each other. Locke still feels really ambiguous to me as does the whole Spartan iv thing. Guess I should research it some more. But, I like them in the game so there’s that.
Finished the campaign, I enjoyed it and liked all the teams characters. Honestly think it would be stronger if they focused one or the other though. Buck and Locke did provide some personality. Blue team feels a bit cooler to me overall and I’d like to play a campaign with just them. This one felt more Osiris,so much so that they could’ve just done them. Probably cause holy hell though with no mc…of course…reach.

Why do the Rookies always die? It is stupid.
