Is there any backstory or explanation as to who the 13 dead Spartans are on the mission Lone Wolf? I just ran through the Reach campaign for old times sake and completely forgot about those guys.

They are the operatives from the other Spartan 3 teams in reach.

Well I figured that much but I was wondering more about the specifics if there are any.
Jun’s line in the New Alexandria mission:
”Sir, that true about Guantlet, Red, and Echo teams assigned to civilian evac ops?”
That’s literally all we really know about the other Spartan-III teams active on Reach during its fall.
As a side note, I find it kind of funny just how many different Red Teams there have been throughout Spartan history (Jerome, Alice, and Douglas; The Generator Defense Team; and this barely mentioned Spartan-III squad).

Is there confirmation that those three teams are specifically the ones found on Lone wolf though? I thought it was just speculation?
All we got is speculation. Since those are the only other Spartan-III teams we know of actually active on Reach at the time. It’s always possible there will be some piece of fiction down the road that gives us an official story.
They are most likely put there to make the scene and atmosphere more gritty and dark.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the Generator Defense Team and this Spartan-III squad were the same.

The Generator Defense Team I was referring to is the Spartan-II team from The Fall of Reach book. I should have been more clear.

Oh, duh - my bad. I completely forgot about that one. I thought there was a weird thing where the Firefight Generator Defense thing was played as a “canon” spartan squad.

Spartan-III CAT2 teams assigned to civilian evac, Gauntlet, Red, and Echo. Don’t get confused with the other Red Team callsigns such as the II team on Reach at the same time and the resuscitated Red Team. They most likely were given orders by Holland to assist Noble with bringing the part of Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn, rallying up at some point along the way(or beforehand). You can clearly tell they’re from separate teams at the end because CAT2 teams have a max of six from what we know. Holland never assigned more than six, for example, Rosenda-A344 wasn’t assigned was only gonna be a replacement, and B312 a replacement for Thom-A293. Note: This cant be Spartan-IIs because IIs at the time only had Mark V and these Spartans are randomly generated armor and the only exception were the comics with a variety of helmet changes(But only for identification). Note: Kevin-A282 was apart of one these teams because they’re no other CAT2 teams on Reach we knew about at the time.
