Which model Pelican is the best? DT-77 vs DT-79

Hey y’all,

I’m just curious… was anyone on board with the shift going into Halo 4 from the classic DT77 pelican to the new 343 style DT79? Which of them do you think looks best? I’m really personally hoping that someday 343 will go back to the DT77 style… it was so much more sleek and military looking than the new one. I would have thought that Infinite would be a great time to go back to the original design, what with the spiritual reboot and older tech being used.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Are there any big fans of the DT-79 out there?

I prefer the old design myself. The new design actually has aerodynamic flaws in it’s wings.

Huge fan of the DT77, but I do appreciate the DT79 as well. I think the DT79 perhaps reflects the post-war UNSC better though… the DT77 is just gruff and functional, whereas the DT79 looks a bit more flashy and optimised.

Infinite could give plenty of excuses to be using older ‘stores’ vehicles as the UNSC’s MIC is entirely under Cortana’s control seemingly.

DT-77 to an extent. This is partially influenced by nostalgia, but also ties with the design. The DT-77 I feel fills the role of a troop-carrier perfectly. Lightly armed while being fast and mobile, the perfect VTOL for an engaging battle. The DT-77 holds a special place in my heart because its a dream of mine to be able to fly one. Growing up I was always around Military planes, seeing as I lived right next to an Airforce base. They were always fascinating to me, and kick started my passion towards military planes. When I see the pelicans flying over The Silent Cartographer, I get reminded of seeing the large C-5B’s flying over our house. The Pelican was always “that plane I wanted to fly” because of how mesmerizing it was to see in campaign. I still feel the same way I did about it then as I do now.

The DT-79 is a different story. I always had a mixed view on its design. From what I’ve seen, the DT-79 is more tailored to a attack role rather than a drop ship. Its armed to the brim with rocket pods, machine guns, sometimes even a spartan laser and cannon on gunship variants. It doesn’t focus on the quick and mobile troop transports that were provided by the DT-77. Something I would absolutely love to see in Infinite would be both pelican flying side by side. Have the classic pelicans as the ones providing transport and aid. While the DT-79’s assist with clearing out enemy encampments with its arsenal.

Never liked the DT-79. However, I am very very fond of its reinterpretation as a Condor. Making it entirely different from the old Pelican in Halo Wars 2 was an incredibly inspired idea.

That’s an excellent point. Forgot about the Condor entirely.

100% the DT77 Pelican Just Beautiful!!! Especially the police pelican!

Condor is great and I entirely agree with the above sentiment. I would like to see a Condor from an FPS perspective.

I am a fan of both designs, however I prefer my pelican looking classic (DT77). However 343i could continue using the DT-79 design through an entirely different vehicle, namely the Condor.

Given it was already namechecked in the gameplay reveal, I think it’s a safe bet we’ll see it in Infinite

Very excited for it. I hope its going to be an epic experience, but with features like these I am highly confident.

I never got behind the 343 era Pelicans. There are some designs I think 343 nailed when they introduced them, like the Halo 5 Plasma Pistol and Needler designs, but the Pelicans just didn’t do it for me.

I like both.
I prefer the DT-77.
Look at any military and there will be multiple variants of particular machines of war, as such, I thought seeing different variants seemed good, and I wasn’t opposed to the aesthetic introduced.
I think the Infinite model appears to be a DT-77, or maybe some new model based on that?

The DT-77 is the Pelican for me. It’s just soo iconic in my opinion.

Massive fan of the DT77 for obvious reasons.
Really couldn’t get behind the DT79. For me it was the shape of the bottom half, having little stumpy feet rather than the large retractable legs of the 77.
With the Pelican being ‘officially’ pilotable in Halo 4, 343 likely made the design more boxy to make landing it easier. Like, if the player can’t tell exactly where the leg is going to extend to, and it ends up being slightly off the platform, it may have caused the craft to topple over the edge once you exit, or something like that.

The Condor seems to be based off of the 79 design, and I’d be happy if the Condor returned looking the same, but I am please Infinite’s Pelican looks to be the DT77.

Dt 79 gunship. Was awesome so I’m in favour

Damn. You just made my day! I totally assumed it would be a DT-79 since its 343 and post war, but it does look a lot more like a DT-77. Really glad you noticed that. Would be really stoked to see the DT-77 as the standard with Condors appearing as well.

any pelican from the first 3 halos

Good to see the DT-77 making a return. Finally I can look forward to an officially licensed Pelican that I can display.

You’re thinking of the DT-77 then! It’s a pretty sweet looking ship. I was just curious if anyone actually liked the DT-79 from Halo 4/5 more but it seems like only 343 does lol.
