My buddy’s current setup is 20 MBPS download/ 0.5 MBPS upload on cable internet. For a similar price, we can get 5 MBPS download/ 5 MBPS upload on fibre internet (I don’t think it’s the same as the awesome fibre optic, maybe it is but watered down).
Is fiber quicker with the PING? Is the slower download speed irrelevent to how much I will lag?
I’m assuming the better upload speed on fibre will allow me to get host more and there will be no lag by definition.
Just wondering if anyone knows alot about this, I don’t have the energy to rage about teleportation tactics anymore. There seems to be no great thread for this when I searched it. Thank you!
Right now i am running a 5mb with 1 mb up load, I have no problem, I have my 360 set to an ip for port forwarding and my router gives my laptop and comp primary access to my band with, so it caps my 360 at 5mb and 1mb I have all green on all my games and can host with no problem, in fact in some other games with peps i play with i always have to be the host because they lag out. I can run my lap and comp with live just not all three at once.
go to speed.net to test your speed and see if its what you need it to be.
As long as you set your router up good and DMZ the ip set for your 360 the 5mb should be fine.
just custom set it up so you can have that on your 360 only you do not want your network wide open on all ip’s because there people that are total YOnks out there and have nothing better to do then mess up other peoples lives.
my package was 50 meg’s but after a contentious failed tests from speed.net i had them switch it back to 30 because no point paying for 50 when you only get 33.
hope this helps you

Depends on the hardware on both ends, the routing your provider uses and congestion if any.
Some cable companies massively oversubscribe and download/upload speeds are far short of what they promise in peak hours with packet loss and/or high latency also possibilities.
A 1/0.5 mbit service should provide a very similar service as a 100/100mbit service with the same provider and infrastructure provided you don’t get host.
The pipe being larger won’t make any difference if the tap in only trickling and game netcode uses very little data.
Don’t think upgrading will yield host more often either as I frequently see Mexicans and other people with terrible internet pull host over people with 100mbit Verizon FIOS and business grade internet.
Reach has no QoS and just guesses as to who would be the best host, even if you had an extremely low latency connection with the best routing possible when you land on trashy hosts that Reach is known for you WILL lag.
You only need roughly 0.5 up in order to host a 16-player game, this would be the bare minimum and in games involving people from multiple countries, more would be needed.
For gaming upload is more important than download, however personally I would still stick with the 20/0.5 simply because I use the internet for a lot of things other than gaming, and download speed is more important to me in this regard.
