Where would Halo 5 fit in the leaderboard with all the other Halo games?
For me Halo 5 is probably one of the best Halo games yet. Probably #1 for me to be perfectly honest.
Allow me to explain. I loved the original trilogy as much as the next guy and they will always be classics. However I am able to look beyond the nostalgia and see great advances mechanically. I like the new spartan abilities and don’t find any of them intrusive or overpowered.
Yes I like sprint. Once more let me explain. Playing through the campaigns and playing mp in the MCC and playing them all in their original forms there is a lot that feels heavily dated and slow compared to the halo games from Reach onward. I personally loved Reach. I am an avid gamer , halo fan from the beginning, and entering my 3rd academic year in college for video game design so I take games very seriously when it comes to analyzing the good and bad of them. Sprint is an ability to me that honesty felt to me more like a “what took them so long.” It really mitigates the time spent in the open as a sitting duck and makes players have to aim better to hit a target that is moving more like how a Spartan realistically would be. These are super soldiers famed for their strength and speed in combat. They feel now like what Spartans were always meant to be like.
Mechanically speaking I don’t think I have played another Halo game where the controls have felt as fluid and tight as they do here. Now I haven’t played a ton of halo 5’s mp so I only know that minus some odd spawning Swat is glorious. I haven’t tried out war zone yet as I am working through campaign. The ui feels good and nothing has felt odd or out of place. A couple controls were different but I’ve picked them up easily.
Mechanics 10/10
MP is stellar. Even though I’ve only played a fee matches I have had a blast. Probably the most fun I’ve had since reach. Yes I enjoyed Reach too. I feel like based on what I read on the forums that I am commuting the seven dearly sins but I could careless.
On this area 10/10
Without giving spoilers of what happens I don’t really understand all the hate flying it. It feels very sold and each mission has been a blast. My only gripe so far is that there have been missions that are really short and lack any combat whatsoever. They feel more like they should have been part of the prior mission than counted as one of their own. I’ve only played one of these mission types but I am sure there are more. It almost felt pace breaking to have these missions as seperase entities. Reach had an investigative mission part in the beginning of Winter Contingency short though it may have been before the action got going. There is plenty of downtime in missions throughout the franchise bit I don’t think an entire mission or several that are completely narrative in purpose were needed. They could have be . Cutscenes and the pacing of those parts wouldn’t have missed a beat. These missions are really my only gripe with campaign. Yes I even enjoy fighting legions of prometheans. The campaign isn’t exactly what the marketing campaign said, but I think that may actually have been the point, but who am I to go against the grain of all the hate.
Campaign 9/10
Campaign note: to anyone who says the mission design is bland and repetitive I urge you to take a good long look at halo: ce (how many deadly sins have i committed so far) I like it as much as the next guy but there is some really bad level design here. Just look at the library, keys, and two betrayals. The library is needlessly long and repetitive and the other two are basically playing other levels rescinded with a side of flood and a different route through the level. Two betrayals is just assault on the control room with flood. Though I liked the story I think it had the weakest game play by far of the franchise. Part of that is due to its age, but the level design needed a lot of work and we got that in halo 2.
Balancing feels really good right now from what I’ve experienced. I know campaign enemies aren’t human players but dropping them and dropping a spartan don’t have much disparity in resilience when comparing Spartans to prometheans soldiers and elites. No weapon I’ve picked up has just screamed overpowered to me.
For vehicles they all feel pretty good to me. I like the increased resilience of the banshee as for a long time now they have felt like covenant paper machete in resilience. Rocket goose need I say more. That mongoose is just plain awesome. Overall I feel vehicles have seen a great improvement so far. I’ll have to see more when I play warzone.
I know this is long winded but I hope it answered your question. Halo 5 is an incredible experience and while it isn’t classic halo it isn’t supposed to be. Halo doesn’t feel like COD to me and I think 343 have handled the franchise really well. Games have to evolve or they begin to feel dated and clunky. Yes I love the classic Halo’s, it I can also see their age. I don’t enjoy them any less, but I am happy to see halo evolving.

Halo 5 =/= Halo 4 =/= Reach

My order as it stands at this moment. Possibly could change but doubtful.
I’m just going to list them. This is going to be hard, and this changes a lot. Also, I still have to play Halo 5’s campaign like 30 times before I decide how much I love it:

Too early to say just yet but it has the potential to be my favourite in the series thus far. Halo 2 still holds the crown for now until I have spent more time with the MP. So far though the appears to be a nice skill gap and the fact that their is no host or lag for me anyway is just a super added bonus. One thing I think needs addressing though and perhaps after a few weeks this will be fixed but parties need matching only with other parties and not a bunch of randoms.

Ce, 3, 2, reach/Halo 5. Halo 5 would be ahead of reach instead of tied, if it launched with more gametypes. I’ve played over three hours and I have played every gametype multiple times and almost every map. They need more content in mp.
Fourth best game in the franchise by far. Nothing beats the original trilogy, but they really cleaned up their act with this game.
