Where were the Guardians before? (Spoilers)

Why has there never been any mention of Guardians outside of getting killed by outside sources in multiplayer games? If they really are this massive Mantle enforcing peace corps of Forerunner space robocops, why have we not heard of them or were given any indication as to what they did and how they did it?

Maybe it was a compartmentalized bit of Forerunner tech that was built in secret but if there really is as many as they said there were, policing all inhabitated space in the galaxy, seems kind of hard to hide.

And if they’re as powerful as Exuberant Witness says they are (from Exuberant Witness stating that Cortana would only need one to do what she’s trying to do), why didn’t the Covenant ever try to take control of these to use against humanity like they tried to do with the fleet of Forerunner ships in Halo Wars? Or why didn’t the Forerunners use them to help fight the Flood? They aren’t organic. They can’t be infected. And they can obviously be controlled by an AI. Offensive Bias or another worthy contender class Ancilla would’ve been perfect for the job.

It just seems to conflict.

Any theories?

Completely agree.

Initially (before I played campaign) I thought they were part of how the Forerunners pushed the Precursors out of the galaxy and as such, were buried and forgotten along with the living memory of those events.

…obviously not lol (would’ve been too cool a storyline anyways…)

You don’t hear about them before because they were buried. The Sangheili knew about the one under Sunaion but apparently didn’t know how to control it or feared it, hence why their is a legend that says it must never be awakened. Also, AI can be infected by the Flood. It’s called the logic plague and contributed to the Forerunner’s downfall (Mendicant Bias was just the first AI to turn against the ecumene). Of course, there’s nothing that says Offensive Bias didn’t use the Guardians in its final battle against Mendicant Bias, since we don’t actually have too much detail about what ships and weapons it had. So yeah, there’s really nothing about the Guardians that conflicts with established canon.

They are super powerful, but so too were the flood. Nothing conflicts with established canon

Don’t forget there was flood back than so guardians were perfect weapons for killing the flood if the Halo ring fail.

Ok. Yeah. I was thinking along the lines of the Guardians themselves couldn’t be infected. I didn’t stop to think about the AI controlling them being afflicted by logic plague.

Humans were the only ones to turn on the Forerunner tech.
