Just watched the PAX panel; great stuff, and it looks exciting. During the whole presentation of weapon tweaking and the “new code,” I couldn’t help but ask myself “If it’s possible to do this, why is fixing Theater such a big issue?”
I - and I’m sure that I am not alone - extremely miss Photoshoots with the variety and scenery that Campaign and Spartan Ops offers (Campaign more so, but there are fun moments in SpOps.) At the release of Halo 4, we heard that this might be fixed in the future, and since then we’ve heard nothing. Or at least I have heard nothing.
Is there news for this? Plans? I really miss not being able to document some of my more exciting moments in Spartan Ops, or making a Desktop background from my favorite Campaign vista.
Unfortunately, they announced a while ago that it isn’t going to happen. Source.
To be fair, that does say “currently.” I take that to mean “At this moment in time we’re not working on it.”
But even still, that begs the question: Why? If code can be rewritten for the weapons and skill-rankings so easily, why can it not be done so for theater?
Halo 4 uses pre-rendered cutscenes, unlike in previous Halo games where they are all in-engine. It would be impossible to move the camera around on these cutscenes due to them being rendered as a 2D image.
At least that’s how I understand it.

It means they’ve got a lot of other complaints to address, and this issue isn’t as big or game breaking.
Once they’ve got everything fixed, and if there’s still enough time left, I’m sure they might consider it. Although I wouldn’t get my hopes ups.

No, the cutscenes in the Halo 4 campaign use in-game engines. Only the “Episodes” of Spartan Ops and the Epilogue and Prologue use pre-rendered scenes, yet even still I don’t imagine these interfering with gameplay (and theater view of it,) as they are treated as separate “levels” or cutscenes entirely than the rest of the played missions.

We couldn’t do this on Halo 3, ODST or Reach, and yet it worked fine.
And Assassin, I do hope that they do eventually fix it. Any major changes to Halo 4 seem to be done, for the most part.
