“Were it so easy…”
Five years have passed since those echoing words have been spoken and John 117 has once again returned to lead this franchise anew with the recent release of Halo 4. But what next?
The story of Spartan Ops is strange and confusing. Am I the only one who still wonders “What the heck is going on?” now and again? Does Sarah Palmer have the ability to lead effectively? Why is 343 making Dr. Halsey evil? Why does Commander Lasky have a bland personality? Where is this story going?
What happened to the Master Chief? For me, and probably most of you, this is at the foremost of our questions. Where is this story going?
Sometimes I question 343i. I question why grunts, jackals, and elites look different. I question why Spartans look like anime robot ninja soldiers rather than special forces bad-A’s. I question why they killed Cortana.
Why are we being labeled “hardcore fans”? Are we swept aside for the “gamers”?(read Spartan Ops Episode Review) 343i calling the people who’ve read the books hardcore repetitively made me a little annoyed. Shouldn’t the studio who actually made the game read the books too? Seriously, it’s like they placed the readers in a separate bracket which they are not a part of. Shouldn’t they be even more hardcore than the readers? Shouldn’t they know what game they’re making?
I’m very confused as to where the franchise is going. Apparently Dr. Halsey is turning on humanity even though she gave up hers to create the Spartan Program (she felt guilty everybody!). John is not a part of the action. Cortana appears to be dead.
So where do you think Halo is going in the future?
The plot of Spartan Ops consists of Jul 'Mdama attempting to gain access to the Janus Key which provides the location of every Forerunner artifact they built. It’s never explained how exactly he knows of this key but considering the fact the Didact united the Covenant forces under his command in the Campaign and Jul "Mdama is referred to as “The Didact’s Hand” it’s not hard to surmise that he learned of it from the Didact himself. Indeed the Librarian tells Halsey that the key was originally meant for the Didact when his meditation was complete.
Unfortunately Jul’s Elites could not get access to it because he’s not Human so he kidnapped Doctor Glassman who then successfully activated the Librarian AI. Jul then assaulted the UNSC Infinity in order to kidnap Halsey so that she may access the AI. Originally he thought Glassman screwed him over because a shield knocked him backwards but it turns out the Librarian did that because the key is for Human eyes only.
Halsey is considered a liability by ONI because she willing communicated with the enemy and then allowed herself to be kidnapped. Of course she only did this to use Jul to get what she wanted and as Thorne points out at the end of that particular episode, she only did it to ensure they got the Key. However Palmer attempted to carry out that order anyway and now Halsey thinks that Majestic was out to get her and she’s now siding with Jul for “revenge.” Basically it’s all a big misunderstanding.
There are two locations that are mentioned in this series which provide us with a place to go in Halo 5. The Absolute Record and the Librarian’s Rest. What these locations are supposed to be is currently unknown but their names could be a clue as to their purpose. The Librarian wished us to take the Janus Key to this Absolute Record so it’s probably some kind of uber-Library. At the end of Halo Primordium the Chakas fragment, designated “Guilty Spark” by ONI, mentioned the Librarian was still alive and he knew her location. Considering the name of the second location, “Librarian’s Rest” we could guess that that is where she is hidden.
The one mysterious thing that we do know is that Humanity is soon going to be tested by the Precursors to determine whether or not they can uphold the Mantle. What this test will be is unknown but considering the Librarian wanted us to become a powerful military force and the Didact wanted us to be an army of killbots I would say the test will be violent. Possibly an extragalactic invading army of Flood or something else entirely.
We will learn more when Silentium comes out in a few weeks and we may even get a second season of Spartan Ops one day. Halo has a lot of things to explore before this is over.
