After playing Halo 5 guardians campaign, I can’t even remember why The Master Chief went AWOL, or if he ever did. This cutscene reminds me of what we could have gotten. I don’t want to spread hate, but this version feels so much better than what we got.
(lazy link please)The Campaign literally said he went AWOL.
Sometime between the pre-launch marketing campaign that we the consumers saw (TV spots, Halo 2 Anniv. bookend cutscenes, Hunt the Truth) and the actual release of Halo 5, Microsoft totally stepped in and -Yoinked!- it all up. They saw that there were more players complaining about Halo 4’s story than in past games (even though I mostly see positive reviews for H4’s story? Multiplayer was bleh, but myself and a ton of other people think the campaign was good), and got scared that 343i was gonna keep “screwing up,” so they stepped in and forced rewrites and, in the case of Locke just two months (I think) before release, recast voice actors. Idk if you’ve ever heard about games or movies or TV shows being forced to go through rewrites that heavily deviate from the creators’ original script, but it never works out. coughSuicideSquadcoughFantasticFourcough
This is from a post I saw, stating “Late Night Gaming claimed that Microsoft wanted Cortana back into the franchise and 343 had to rewrite the story from their original plan (343’s plan was making Halo 5 a spin-off game instead with just Fireteam Osiris and a more open-world style game). As a result, Cortana became the main antagonist in Halo 5.”
Though admittedly, 343i definitely could’ve salvaged something much more respectable than what we got, just knowing that the big bad corporate -Yoink–nozzles at Microsoft interfered and mucked this up for everyone is very frustrating for me as a die-hard Halo lover. I can only imagine how irritating it must’ve been for 343 and the campaign developers
So thanks, Microsoft! Thanks for pooping on what could’ve been and causing the ENTIRE HALO COMMUNITY to hate the story and tearing it to shreds for years to come, just like you thought we were doing after Halo 4

And that’s kinda the extent of it. Nobody ever questioned his loyalty to the UNSC or anything like how the marketing said.
I like it the post credits scene. with themonitor
That was the weakest AWOL of all time. It’s the equivalent of a fast food employee refusing to empty out the restaurant’s trash cans in favor of sweeping the floors. Man, if only the marketing campaign was an actual indication of what Halo 5 would be… sigh

Knowing this actually makes me pretty mad. Microsoft denied us of some potentially incredible games all because of a misunderstanding? Cortana isn’t the real enemy here!

Sigh, if only. Locke actually had personality in that trailer. Still didn’t care about him though.
Your issue is with this, not those “hunt the truth” adverts?
The hunt the truth thing confused me, as in GoW where you choose the path of your storyline.
Side with Locke or Chief
I thought Hunt the Truth was incredibly well-done, and set the tone for a much darker and complex game than we were given. Not to mention the aggressive -Yoink!- Keegan-Michael Key’s performance gave me.
Did you go through the campaign and skip the cut scenes? It seems people who complain about the campaign didn’t pay attention to what was being said or the cut scenes. Sure H5 campaign wasn’t great and the script was pretty bad but there was enough information to tell what was going on. Yes the Chief went AWOL, they told him not to go after Cortana and he did anyways. No there wasn’t a hunt or anything seeing how we and the unsc knew where Chief was going and even why he was going there. Now it wasn’t really said why they didn’t want chief to go after Cortana, something Dr. Halsey must know because during the campaign when she learned Chief was going after her she said,“No John must not speak to her.” Clearly Halesy knows something about Cortana.

I like how the entire character pool suddenly knew all about cortana’s reappearance after chief had his vision even though there was no explained way that the UNSC should have even known that cortana was back, but blue team didn’t know until chief told them.
I guess the entire UNSC was in John’s mind right then kekeke
The reason Master Chief went AWOL was very weak and ended up returning anyway. In my opinion, there was no need for Master Chief to do such action. It could have been a mission ordered by UNSC and be a lot better story with this path. Master Chief went AWOL because he thought Cortana was on Meridian without certainty.

How Halsey even learned about Cortana being back is a missed detail. The Intel mentions her picking up readings, but how and when did that happen? Last we saw Halsey, she and Jul and the UNSC came out empty-handed at the Absolute Record. What happens between then and Halo 5 is absent.

Also, I like how the game mentioned the fact that she lost an arm but then immediately tells the audience that they are dumb for asking and don’t ask me again.
It’s hard to place blame. There’s rumor, but I’m not going to charge at Microsoft OR 343 with my pitchfork based on a mere rumor.

There’s no evidence that any of that is true. Late Night Gaming never provided sources for his “information”.
In the video in which he states this information, he’s just repeating what the community had already been feeling/thinking for a while. He didn’t really provide anything “new” other than claiming to have talked to some people at 343, which would lead many to believe it was true, even though he never provided evidence.

Oh, okay. While the “information” is certainly possible, it’s like you stressed; it’s only credible with evidence. I hope Microsoft really did screw up Halo 5, though, because I want to believe 343i wants to live up to Bungie’s name and properly carry on their legacy. As for claiming that you spoke to “some people at [company name]”, you always provide screenshots or recordings of the conversation(s)! This Late Night Gaming guy, is he new at investigations and providing evidence?
You don’t need to read leaks or dig around to know something went wrong with the marketing and story. There’s other stuff out there with claimed sources as well besides LNG’s take on it which have similar stories, but I’ll just leave it at that. Didn’t 343 delete those trailer videos as well? Don’t really remember.
