The AR might be filling that role.
My idea for smgs/assault rifles/br would be melee related. The shorter range the gun the more precedent it takes on melee quickness or range. Like when in halo you melee someone and you both die cause they melee you at the same time, say if you have an smg and they have an assault rifle you get the upper hand all the way up the ladder with sniper rifles/rocket launchers being the last on the list.

Every weapon they showed so far has a clear impact on the game. They are probably still reworking it if it is in the game.
I was a little bummed that SMGs may not be in the game… but then I saw that Commando, and that thing is looking -Yoink!-.

I quite liked the SMG, it wasn’t particularly useful once dual wielding was dropped though
Reminder: If its not there at launch, it could be added in a seasonal update.
I’m sure there’s tons of weapons they haven’t shown off yet
