When was Serena killed?

Very minor spoilers, so beware

At the beginning of the game, Serena says she took care of her own dispensation, presumably decades ago, so how is she talking in the present tense (“we’ve been adrift for 28 years”)? Did she leave behind a very small stable fragment that could inform Cutter of the current status when they needed to be woken up? Or did she somehow prolong herself around 28 years until the crew woke up? I swear she dispensed of herself in a comic but does anyone have an answer to this? Answer would be much appreciated, thanks.

do you remember in halo 4 when cortana split off her rampant parts of her personality, i believe thats what serena was doing when she was running the ship for 28 years, removing her rampant parts, leaving a smaller and smaller fragment of herself behind to maintain small functions of the ship (ai’s can split off parts of themselves to control small parts of system independantly from the rest of the ai). Also, rest in peace serena, was genuinly sad when the messaged played in the first cutscene.

It’s not a spoiler. She left a final message before she decided to decommission herself.

Oh ok so she left behind a very small logistical piece to run things. Presumably she used that to wake up the crew. I’m assuming it’s illegal for an AI to keep themselves going like that and carrying out operations so is that what she meant by ‘this one final breach of protocol’?
