I for one hope Master Chief never dies and Halo (OVERALL) eventually gets its happy ending, or horrific not happy ending, either way. If or when Chief does die, I hope they have a cut-scene where Chief grabs a new Spartan and gives him an order, “It’s up to you now, Finish the fight, don’t let humanity down”. Then it goes to where you get to design your Spartan and the next chapter or story begins with “you” as the main character. I’d like every one else’s thoughts on how you would like Chief’s death or no death to be.
In all honesty I hope he never ever does die. It would kill me inside.
Chief as a character will have to be retired eventually. Steve Downes isn’t getting any younger and may one day retire from voice acting. I’m not so keen on player characters taking the role of main characters since I feel that stifled how much you can do with them. Chief struck a balance of being engaging in the games, books, and comics.
Makes it hard to have a successor, but it’s why I’ve been happy to see 343 possibly test the waters with characters like Gabriel Thorne and Jameson Locke. Are they going to be the next MC? Highly doubt it (and no I don’t need your essays about how bad either are, I personally liked both for various reasons that I’d be happy to discuss assuming your do so in good faith), but at least 343 is forward thinking enough to care about the franchises future.

The problem is that 343’s had a really hard time coming up with a new character to replace him with. Thorne and Locke both didn’t work out at all. And while I’d consider Palmer worth giving a shot a lot of the community seems to hate her. Noble 6 would have been perfect if he didn’t die on Reach, and the Arbiter would be pretty awesome but the story needs to stay human-unsc centric.
I’m thinking the best bet after Master Chief is to just try to recapture the magic of Noble 6, by having a team of great Spartans, that you are not the leader of, be the emotional center of the story while the main character plays a relatively blank slate that rarely speaks. And of course using your multiplayer Spartan. It’s just, we need a team of great Spartans to go along with the new main character and neither Majestic nor Osiris were it.

He would retire due to a huge injury to his arm, making him nearly incapable to fight. It would happen as the final boss of (later Halo game) dies.
When the chief dies, grunts will sprout wings and fly.
If you ask me, I seriously want him to die or just retire. See, there’s Cortana is either gonna die or get back on the good side, which isn’t possible at all since UNSC won’t accept her. So she’s gonna die , definately by John’s hand. Now, they gotta kill her for real this time, they can’t resurect her again.after infinite, and killing cortana, I can’t see chief functioning for unsc without Cortana or with any other ai, no! That would be horrible if you ask me. So there’s is no chief without Cortana. So he gotta die just after killing cortana or something like that or retire after doing few operations due to guilt he would be carrying over himself by killing cortana .
