People keep talking about how useless the AR is in Halo and how useless it will be in Halo 4. In my opinion, it is great and I hope it is just as good in Halo 4.
In Halo 3, I love the AR. In Slayer BRs, I use the BR mostly, but I often switch to my AR, even if I have a full clip in the AR.
In Reach, it’s one of my favorite weapons. It’s very effective, especially for weakining shields and going in for a good ol’ pummel. In fact, in Reach, it’s 4th place on my Service Record for the most kills with a particualr weapon.
I hope the AR is still just as good in Halo 4.
Why does everyone hate it so much? Just becuase it’s not a precision weapon doesn’t make it total crap.
People hated it because of how underpowered it was. In Halo 3 it was not as bad because of its accuracy. But in Reach its a total piece of crap because of Bloom. The AR usually takes 1 whole clip to kill someone, unless its Halo CE and CEA which everything is overpowered. Bloom for the AR was to encourage pacing ur shots, but thats useless as it takes a whole mag of continuous firing to kill.

The shotgun kills faster than any of those close up. The Fuel Rod Gun kills faster. The Rocket Launcher kills faster. The Energy Sword kills faster up close. The Sniper Rifle kills faster if you can aim. The Needler kills faster in certain situations. All of those kill faster than the Magnum, BR, Carnine, and the DMR, but are those four weapons crappy just because something can kills players quicker?
It works the same with the AR. Sure, there are times when other weapons are more effective, but that certainly doesn’t make the AR crappy.
It doesn’t serve a knowledgeable player, i.e., it has no effective purpose in a player’s arsenal. There’s plenty of other weapons that are better than an AR, and most are easily obtained off-spawn. It’s like saying, “why does that player swap his BR for that rocket launcher?” It’s because that weapon will serve his purpose better (there’s some exceptions where you won’t swap it, of course :3). It’s also random due to its large spread, and players don’t like randomness because they can’t master it.

Not only is it less useful than the precision weapons, it’s also easier to use. Competitively it’s not really a weapon that can be taken seriously.
Precision weapons: high accuracy and timing required, high damage output as reward.
AR: holding down the trigger required, low damage output to reflect the fact that it takes little skill to use.

Bloom doesn’t really change its effectiveness for me. If the situation calls for a different weapon, then I’ll use a different weapon. The Reach AR certainly did not suck, but some people just have different preferences. Something doesn’t suck just because there is something better than it. This can also be said about players. I don’t suck, but there are MANY players out there who could easily beat me and are much better than me.

Gonna hafta disagree. In Halo 3, it was a weak-as-crap close-up weapon that sounded like a pea-shooter, which you’d drop for the first thing you come across, besides the magnum.
In Reach, it was effective and had better sound, and could be used almost like an automatic precision-weapon minus headshots if used effectively. If there’s one thing bloom-haters have to admit, it’s that its addition on automatic weapons was well done in Reach.

Except the AR in Reach consistently took 18-23 bullets to kill even at close range. Bloom on it made it even worse.

It was still an incredibly useful gun. I often get kills at a range more suitable for a DMR. It changed from an average short-range weapon to a useful short-to-mid-range weapon.
It cannot be a primary weapon if it takes up over half a magazine to kill somebody. If it’s going to have less range than a secondary weapon in a game with a weapon list that doesn’t involve “upgraded versions” of the same gun, it has to kill more than 1 person before reloading.
We hate how it’s underpowered in the games. In Halo 3, it was often getting kills from melee, not the gun. It’s often dumped for a BR due to its killing power and the ability to kill more then one person at a time. More ammo, less vulnerability when in the hands of a skilled player. In Reach, you kill one and you swap to something else immediately to keep yourself from reloading mid-fight.
It needs more power. If it’s going to stay at a 32 bullet magazine, it needs to kill more than 2 people. Otherwise, I might as well tell my friends to grind the hell out of Spartan Ops since you still can’t do jack with an AR.

I wouldn’t call that useful. Its time to kill is extremely long compared to any precision weapon even before the zero bloom Anniversary update. After the update:
DMR takes 5 quick headshots to kill. You can kill three people in one clip extremely quickly if you were fast and accurate.
Assault Rifle takes 18-23 bullets to kill. Not only do you expend more than half the clip in killing one opponent, its low damage, fast rate of fire, low accuracy, and bloom meant that a good player would outstrafe some of your bullets and sometimes you would end up using the entire clip and still not killing him.

Unless you’re a better player and you can keep the reticule on him.
DMR has the advantage in mid-long-range combat for obvious reasons, but in close-range, AR could possibly be considered the superior weapon, if its user is skilled enough that he can strafe and dodge his opponent’s shots and keep accurate at the same time.
Of course, there are other factors to account for on both sides, but calling the AR useless is silly; it’s incredibly valuable in its own niche.
The damage it does is is to weak to use it as a burst fire weapon for accuracy and if you dont burst fire the weapon the range will be too short to kill in mid range making it pretty useless.

Only problem is, if you wanted to accomplish this consistently, you would have to burst-fire the gun, further increasing an already slow time to kill.
