What's your early game Shipmaster strategy?

I’ve transitioned to playing as SM. I love his leader powers. But, I can only seem to win with him in late game, around T3.

Early game, I can usually hold off, but he doesn’t have many offensive leader powers, so it’s tough to get ahead when your opponent drops turrets and heals so early. I’m not complaining, but sometimes the game just drags out so long (over an hour).

I know the locust push>teleport seems to be a favorite of some (and just a ghost rush, maybe?), but any other early strategies you SM players use?

I usually quickly tech to Foundries and Apexes. That way I can pump out a Marauder/Grunt/Engineer, or have a Grunt/Banshee/Engineer if I see they’re building anti-vehicle infantry. This build also transitions really well into the late game.

If I scout out my enemy and see that they’re gearing for a rush though I pump out a ton of Ghosts. They can handle Marine/Grunt rushes just fine, but if it’s a Brute rush I build some Suicide Grunts to counter that. I’m still struggling to counter the Kinsano JR rush (surprise surprise) my only hope about with that is if the Kinsano isn’t paying attention and I land a Scout Mine in their army.

That’s good advice. I usually avoid the grunts, because they arent as strong as marines.
Against Kinsano, I’ve had luck just getting to T2 and getting banshees out. Problem is that you might lose map control if your opp is really good.

Grunts actually are pretty great in large numbers and if they’re upgraded. Since they’re cheap and these builds don’t use a lot of power you can afford to upgrade them.

I make the base you spawn with be filled up with unupgraded resource pads. Then spawn 3 grunt squads and take over 3 forerunner power stuff. By then should have enough supplies to make another base. Make a base and while base building send troops to gather resources. Throw down generators on new base and get mass cloaking. Then work towards making 3 scarabs. Then destroy bases.

how could I get 3? I got to 2 scarabs and had more than enough supplies and power, but there was a red symbol saying 100 next too it…
and yea I know this post is old

Ship t1 is just scout and counter. Always double gen, but if you scout a rush put up turrets and a raid camp on your main. In tech 2 get up your third gen and a raid camp if you don’t already have one. Upgrade infantry level so that your spirit support is stronger when you drop it. Get an expo and pump marauder with reaver if there’s any air and get your honor guard out. Never build engineers as Ship, you can just drop them in.

The exception to “always double gen” is probably only on fissures. A hero opener would be your best bet. Going hero against Banished is fine as well since they have no good t1 detect.

uhh ship’s hero and grunts go invisible? this can be used to frustrate the enemy to the point their blood pressure rises, they stroke out, and disconnect. Anyone using ship as their main should be utilizing this and not going st8 to level 2 lmao.

not exactly a base killing force but it can be devastating to anyone who hasn’t built snipes or engineers. Plus most of ships leader powers can be downright nasty

Often try and get my resources up to get tech 2 so warehouse-warehouse-warehouse-gen-gen. During that time usually fill out my army with grunts with ghosts mixed in, once tech 2 comes double foundry as the various vehicles can counter almost anything. Have never wasted my time makes kamakazie grunts as the trade off does not seem worth it to me.

Honor Guard makes good use of cloak because he can also Naruto run at mach 1 for an easy get away, his grunts with cloak are actually really weak, snipers, upgraded scouts, and engineers all render your 300 energy upgrade moot. You’re better off just going ghosts and upgrading them with shields to double their life span.

What’s a warehouse? Suicide grunts are invaluable to Shipmaster and other leaders who get them. Combined with ghosts they create the best defensive unit composition for the Banished and arguably for any leader. You will lose to groups of grunts and marines if you don’t have suicide grunts, especially when they get the grenade/mine upgrade to eat ghosts.

Warehouse/Harvester, Apex/Summit, etc, sometimes get in the mindset of the older game from so many years of gameplay. As for the grunts, I am aware of how effective they can be, but have rarely seen them used for that purpose. I sometimes see team mates making them late game when the battlefield has become filled with infantry.

There shouldn’t be many infantry in the late game of any match, except maybe Cutter to some level but even then it’s iffy. Using Suicide grunts on the offense works if you can catch the enemy out of position and wreak havoc for your grunts to clean up what’s left, but they work the other way too; see their attack coming, try and catch them before they’re ready and spring the grunts on their face.

Pair them with Jump Pack Brutes to let your grunts clear the gap and stomp all over their inevitably grouped together infantry. (works on defense and offense)

Thank you, will have to try that sometime.

Fair warning, I exclusively play 1v1 so that’s all I can speak on. I don’t know anything about 2v2 and all I know about 3v3 is it’s bad. I wish you luck in improving your Shipmaster!

That would explain things, I rarely play 1v1, only now getting into it. Almost always played 3v3 since the game came out as I enjoyed team work.
