What’s wrong with rushing?
It seems that many RTS gamers agree that ending a game in the opening stretch is “bad” and “overly competitive”, but I’m wondering why?
A balanced RTS game ideally plays like a more complicated match of “rock, paper, scissors”, with aggro>boom>turtle>aggro being the standard lineup.
Why does it seem like most players would rather have the lineup be boom>turtle>aggro<boom? It turns games into a match of “Who can throw more tanks at the other guy longer?” and I fail to see the point of playing when a match is nothing but a lagfest full of leader powers.
What do y’all think? Is rushing only for “tryhards” or does it deserve more respect than it gets?
I’d like to keep this civil, insult strategies, not players!
I honestly think a well executed rush is something that takes a great amount of skill. I’m not talking about mindless JPB spam, but more careful timings. I remember watching some of Yodesla’s patented 1 minute Goliath rushes or even his no supply pad rushes that he somehow managed to pull off. Those take a whole lot of skill to manage.
That said, I do understand people’s frustrations. For the most part rushes unless scouted are really hard to counter, but they are a fairly good barometer of where your skill level is at.

I don’t think it’s bad, I just think it’s boring. I mean by rushing you basically only ever use 10% of what the game offers. Never upgrading or using better units. Never really any back and forth games. Just seems like a boring thing to do, especially if that’s the only way you play. Players who rush only remind me of guys who play checkers, but never learned how to play or enjoy chess. LOL idk I’m not mad at it. Usually I can fight it off unless I’m teamed up with turds. Then I take the loss and move on. Basically if you only ever rush, why not just play blitz?

Because of the wait times…wish I could actually play it.
But in all seriousness, I do understand this point of view, and I think it is one shared by many.

So you think rushing boring the same way I think 50 minute long Leader Power slogfest is torturous, that makes sense.
I don’t see rushing as only using 10% of what the game offers, but denying your opponent 90% of what they have available. Any rush that’s more than mainlining jpbs into an enemy base will transition into tech 2 and use a good chunk of what is available and viable (if you keep using just rush/core units you will die if your opponent has a brain).
Voridus and YapYap are both perfect examples; early game is pumping jpbs/riders to divert attention while you get map control and get into tech 2 so you can start sending in marauders and rangers to clean up while your opponent is trying to stabilize from the initial shock.
I like the analogy of checkers vs chess, but I direct you to one of the most basic rules of strategy; the best defense is a good offense. If you are applying pressure, you’re limiting your opponent’s options. Some of the best plays in chess are offensive pushes to constrict your opponent and force them into a disadvantageous position. That’s how I see rushing- not playing a simpler game, but playing to keep your opponent on the back foot.
I exclusively play 1s, so rushing is more viable than in 3s (which is bad and has nothing going for it in terms of skill). I don’t play blitz because I don’t want to get clobbered by pay to win. …Also what Breezy said; nobody plays blitz.
Always will be a viable tactic, just have to counter properly. Heck, have found rushing to be a tad enjoyable having returned to playing Arbiter.
Rushing is a part of every strategy game and isnt boring at all and honestly if youre spamming one type of unit, you’re going to lose. The biggest part of this game is unit composition… any good players wont get taken out by a rush. If you are, dont get frustrated by it, learn from it

“I don’t see rushing as only using 10%, but denying your opponent of 90%” lol that’s the same thing as denying you 90% lol what the hell? Read my comment. I said if all you ever do is rush, that’s a boring way to play. And if you exclusively rush then yeah I’d consider you a try hard who cares more about a video game winning record vs enjoy that 90% you’re factually missing that the game has to offer. Fact is, if a rush works you’ll never reach level 3 base or even upgrade units except what? Maybe 1 or 2? I don’t dislike rushing, but it just gets old and is basically the same as finishing warzone games in 6 minutes when you core someone. I’d hate never using high reqs in a warzone game. Same as never being equally matched and having a 30-60 minute battle vs someone and countering their attack and counter their strategy. To each their own though. Rushing is cool if you like 10 minute battles. I don’t mind it, but I just think man what a boring way to play if that’s all you ever do.

It’s a matter of perspective, you can focus on how little you get to use, or how little your opponent has at their disposal. I agree that if all you do is rush that gets boring, but I also think if most of your games reach into the 30 minute mark you aren’t getting to enjoy the nuances of your early game units and the importance of micro. The later a game goes the lower the overall value of your units and the closer to “who can spam more” the match comes.
Either way to play in excess is bad, but most people seem to glorify an overly long and saturated game without wanting to work for it while simultaneously cursing the idea of a fast paced match.

Yeah agreed. I rush sometimes to change it up. But something about them epic long battles where I counter my opponents army or when I finally eliminate his second/third base and know “now I have him”. Just so awesome.

Most new players or more casual players want to play with their favorite halo units and super units. Rushing makes the game so it is just the basic stuff like jump pack brutes and marines (Note I’m not saying it doesn’t take skill). I have nothing against rushing especially when you are playing ranked, as it is supposed to be competitive so you should play to win at all costs. Note though if you are in a party and are Goliath rushing the rank three cuter in the team war you are kind of killing the casual community, at least toy with him so he can get his condor out and his tanks (you can still do that and easily get a win). Or just play ranked with your team of 99 decis and colonies you will probably do fine.

I dont need a level 3 base if you’re dead from my rush lmao.
Also rushing doesn’t even set you back that far. If I can get atleast 1 pad or a gen it’s already set yoy back as far as me and killing a gen practically hurts you for the rest of the game.
Some people enjoy the game by winning in being competitive. Just because you dont doesn’t mean they’re a sweaty tryhard.
I don’t know why you’d make a thread about this. Especially adding “insult strategies not players,” when the reason people don’t like rushing is because they don’t know how to counter it. The majority of players aren’t great, so that mentality is pretty common. Arguing about it won’t solve anything. If it did, rushing would’ve stopped being an “issue” decades ago.

Mostly boredom, should I have made a “how to counter rushes” thread instead?
The majority of players suck eggs, but that isn’t a problem unless they don’t want to improve.
I agree that arguing doesn’t really help much, but it’s fun and lets people express their points of view. Maybe they have a point that someone else hadn’t considered.

You’ve missed my point and the whole conversations narrative…bummer…And my points are valid man, if winning in 10 minutes or less is what you like, fine no issues at all. It’s still a way to only use 10% of the games content. Winning and being competitive I get, again you missed the whole point and conversation so idk where to begin. But if all you ever do is rush rush rush, and never do anything else, I’d consider that a try hard. Actually I’d be impressed if there’s any other way to be a try hard than that. Nothing wrong with a label being “try hard”. But let’s not act like that’s NOT the label of it. That’s basically the ONLY strategy they use in tournaments. Is rush to put pressure on. Why? Because they’re trying hard lol. Done with this conversation mine and the other dudes points were seen and valid so it’s whatever. But next time please read before you respond.
I’d like to point out that in many RTS games, many factions are designed around aggressive play that are left without options once the mid to late game hits. If we’re talking specific examples for HW2, think of how Cutter performs from beginning to late game. Winning in the late game is only the result of the success of the early game. I enjoy aggressive plays and I use it to create a lead that extends into the mid or late game but that is a personal preference.

Any rush that’s more than mainlining jpbs into an enemy base will transition into tech 2 and use a good chunk of what is available and viable (if you keep using just rush/core units you will die if your opponent has a brain).

If you are applying pressure, you’re limiting your opponent’s options. Some of the best plays in chess are offensive pushes to constrict your opponent and force them into a disadvantageous position. That’s how I see rushing- not playing a simpler game, but playing to keep your opponent on the back foot.

That wise man was a try hard…lol

Never really any back and forth games. Just seems like a boring thing to do, especially if that’s the only way you play. Players who rush only remind me of guys who play checkers, but never learned how to play or enjoy chess. LOL idk I’m not mad at it. Usually I can fight it off unless I’m teamed up with turds. Then I take the loss and move on. Basically if you only ever rush, why not just play blitz?

That wise man is a man that doesn’t play anymore, and was a casual. He is none other than the legendary Breezystarfish1
It would be cool if Halo wars 2 had a mode like in AOE 2 where you start with a stone wall around your base (halo wars 2 could do a shield generator), that way people can have a peaceful early game and get their bearings. There would also be a mid section where they can put nodes, supplies/power, and mini bases to encourage early game engagements without losing your base. The mode can also be unranked, but it can be there for new players and for vets who just wants to relax and turtle.
