Was it really that way in the original CE? I never played co-op back then, but this is really annoying. I want my damn Magnum.

Yes, it was that way in the original. It is to prevent you from your partner killing you (or vice versa) for ammo.
I remember Assault Rifle and Plasma Pistol starts were the respawns if I’m not mistaken.
