What's with the marines' armor design?

The armor designs look, as some have pointed out, like Nerf armor. It looks as though it was made in preparation for a movie that can’t afford to get decent looking space marine gear, so 343i made this flimsy crap so it could be easily replicated for a film. It’s HIDEOUS! Of course, for anyone who would like to gauge my badassery meter, the marines from Halo are ranked in this order.

  1. Halo: CE
  2. Halo Wars/Halo 2: Anniversary
  3. Halo 3/ODST
  4. Halo 2
  5. Halo 4/5

Now if they REALLY wanted to make the marines cool, 343i would watch Aliens (1986) and take some notes!

I do think the old Marine armor from Halo 1-3 looked better. Halo 4 was okay, but Halo 5 looks terrible. Halo 1-3 marines actually looked like something the military would use.

I kind of like the idea of their Kevlar/MOLLE armor vest they have, but with the Red/Blue colors of Warzone, it looks terrible.

It is well known that Bungie took heavy inspiration from the Alien films in many aspects,so it would be pointless if 343 would take the same inspiration source. Then we wouldnt have any improvments.
I also like the new look.

There’s a difference between stagnation and consistency. A fine line of course, but at the same time, some parts of Bungie art style didn’t need to just be completely gutted and/or altered for no reason. I certainly enjoyed the militaristic Marines from CE-3. Halo Wars makes them look awesome as well.

My favorite was the halo 2A marines. They still looked like space marines with all the armor, but they still weren’t Spartans.

I loved the design of the Marines in Halo 3. I thought it was really cool but sad, that when they died they’d be covered in blood.

I miss the blood…

Not a huge fan of how they look in Halo 4 and 5. There’s little to no detail to them.

Modular Tactical Vest is what.

Sincerely, I appreciate 343i’s attention to our modern military and this link helped me to understand their motive, but this is also a fictional game. One in which Alien races use Laser technology. Those vests may be fitted to halt ballistic and kinetic weapons, but against a plasma rifle, I doubt it’d hold up well.

Bro… it’s obviously to co-align with their Boomco nerf blaster toy line for 8 year olds! And they should just give the Marines pizza skin armor while they’re at it… because you know, funny joke! The kiddies will love it!

Geez man… what has Halo become!!!

It’s nerf or nothing

The halo 2 anniversary marines are definitely my favorite and would be happy to see that look return

Loved the H2 marines, and the new marines do look like they are wearing nerf armour.

Halo: Reach had the best Marine armor, hands-down. It was a nice evolution of the armor they wore in Halo 3, and it even came with some diverse armor permutations. Bungie perfected the look of the Marines in Reach.

Lol well there about useless anyways so what does it matter what they wear for armour. They die easy. Plus they will unload clips into the wall of their is an enemy on the other side.
Also what they wear matches thier whole voice acting. Hey Spartan…

Well, it’s not like the armor plates (Whatever they are made of. Ceramic? Ceramic titanium? VerbalStatue253, SC Matt 7, Beta 5 Operator, would you guys know any more about this?) would hold up against plasma fire either, since plasma is pretty much always upwards of several thousands of degrees Celsius, melting through it immediately.

What makes them look kinda silly is the lack of attachments, pouches, and other various little things. If there were some pouches for holding ammunition and the like, they’d look more military. Plus the colors. Colors are a little weird. Halo 4 had most of them wearing a sandy beige with an odd shade of brown and a little green. Halo 5 makes them color-coded to a team. Either way, they don’t look great as a result.

You always got to remember that you were 8 years old once, too.

I think the issue with h5 in specific is them color coding them, I can’t remember if te campaign had any since I never really paid attention. I’ve always liked the h2-3 version. CE to me is just silly and is probably the worst.

Where do you think Bungie got the look for the old school marines? And Johnson? And the AR? And the Pelican? And the …

I think there are a couple of Marine corpses in the campaign, but the only human NPCs you encounter are the miners, settlers, scientists, and whoever else is there on Meridian.

The Halo 2 Anniversary Marines were fantastic, and definitely my second favourite design, closely behind the Reach marines. I’m really not a fan of 343i’s marines, they just don’t look as badass as the Bungie-era ones.
