What's with all the hating on sprinting in Halo?

logged in 500+ hours into each Halo game online.
Had no issue when sprint appeared in Reach.
Then made available by default in Halo 4.
And now is infinite in Halo 5.
…I still have no complaints.

And this coming from someone who isn’t a big CoD/BF fan and grew up with FPS games w/o sprint (Unreal Tournament, Quake, Doom, etc)

I dont have the source/citation handy, but they intended sprint to be in halo 2 at one point. It was removed along with other features due to ms needing the game to be out for holiday.

Sprint is fine in my opinion. Some others wont agree.

-Yoink-… when modders revealed the sprint animation in the H2 files, a former Bungie Dev showed up on reddit (proved his identity with the a gift he received after leaving the studio) and talked about the development, during H2 they didn’t continue working on sprint because they realized that it didnot fit Halos gameplay flow and it never came up during Halo 3’s development…

Cool thanks

My biggest issue with it is how it seperates movement from shooting, IMO in halo you should always be able to fire your weapon / throw grenades

I’m not sure. I’m in the same boat. I enjoy it. Without it the game would feel old fashioned and slow, IMO.

I’m glad I could to clear it up…at first I thought you were bending the truth on purpose to make a point for sprint
This is the reddit I was talking about btw

well that’s why I like Sprint.

its a risk/reward.

when you sprint, you risk yourself since you can’t shoot/throw grenades.
but if you don’t sprint, you are slower than those who sprint.

good balance imo.

It’s not that I hate sprint… I just hate seeing Halo drop out of the most played games on Xbox live. With the lower population it makes for more unbalanced games because there is less players to make games from. Also they will not be as likely to add stuff to a game with a low population. Ever since sprint, armor abilities and other gimmicks Halo popularity has dropped big time. Clearly the gimmicks aren’t really working for player retention. MCC botched broken game held a Xbox live most played top ten consistently longer than H5 did and that says something. Take Halo back to its roots. See how it does.

Fun fact, halo player rentention(since you mention it’s been falling) has been falling since h2. So did h3 did something wrong? This is why I don’t see sprint as an issue. Halo is a niche and nothing more now.

Hahaha H3 dropped… good one. It held population quite a long time. Just because you say fact… doesn’t make it fact.

This is exactly how I feel… We’re Spartans! We should be able to shoot, throw grenades, and sprint at the same time.

don’t blame that. blame the rise of CoD/BF.

I dont mind it, but spartan charge is cheap.

Didn’t say it dropped in pop, I said it dropped in player retention. You’re also right, me saying it is a fact doesn’t make it so but you can go look up in another sprint thread where a monitor posted the link. I would, but I can’t on my phone.

To me, sprint is awful because of what it does to the flow/pacing of the game. Halo used to have a nice, comfortable pace that sat somewhere between the slow tactical shooters like Ghost Recon and the fast frantic shooters like Quake. Now, it’s being dragged into that “fast” shooter realm and I hate it.

From my experience on the topic, it’s less about hating “sprinting” as a mechanic, as it is more of how the mechanic is implemented into the core gameplay. Many other games have a sprint mechanic which keeps true to their core game play. The way in which “sprinting” is implemented now into the Halo games is it turns the “Golden Triangle” into essentially a Golden Square, which is closer in terms of core gameplay, to other shooters on the market. If that is a good design decision or not, is completely subjective.

Sprint and the movement abilities changed the map design and the Time-to-Kill which changed the base Halo formula which was working perfectly fine.
Reach had the right idea by making it an optional ability which can easily be taken out, but the armor abilities could have been better implimented. Sprint is perfectly fine for the campaign and naturally large maps, but even everyone has so many movement abilities for what should be snaller maps, that is where it hurts the gameplay.

Really? Because last I heard, someone who worked on the game said it was removed because it messed up to flow or pacing of the game.

Did you know Halo 3 was usually no less than number two in Xbox live activity even when CoD was breaking records? And that was during its third year. The games can co-exist just fine, the problem is Halos gameplay now isn’t as good or unique as it once was.
