I have to seriously question 343i’s armor choices for Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer.
The Mark VI armor is based on the ugly Halo 4 version with it’s fat rounded shoulders, and the other two armors are meh at best. The Elite armor just looks freaky, and all too much like the new Elites in Halo 4 and Halo 5.
If they were going to pick 3 armors for each race, they could’ve done a so much better job. For Mark VI, they should’ve used the model from the Halo 2: Anniversary campaign, which is awesome and completely faithful to the original. Instead of Centurion and Hoplite, they could’ve used Mark V from the Halo: CEA campaign and Mark IV from Halo Wars; it would’ve fit much better, IMO.
The Elite’s armor should’ve been pulled from Halo: Reach or Halo: CE Anniversary. I’m thinking the Combat, Officer, and Zealot armors from Reach would’ve been perfect.
I agree about the Mk VI armor, but I think it was decent. Although personally I love Hoplite, and I think Centurion looks nice for a heavier looking armor.
As for elites, pretty much the same thing. The default was okay. Outrider is beautiful, in my opinion. Invader is kinda odd looking, but awesome for a heavy looking set. The elite models themselves do appear to be closer to the Halo 4/5 models.
The armor theme seemed to be the same for both races. You had the classic model (Mk VI/Warrior), the light, scout looking armor (Hoplite/Outrider), and the heavy. (Centurion/Invader)
Of course, I would have loved to see Mk V, and maybe ODST. And for the elites, the EVA/Ranger armor from Cairo Station would have been a nice addition.
While more classic choices would’ve been awesome, I don’t think the ones we ended up with look bad. They’re just head-scratchers is all. Creating brand new Sangheili armor variants makes no sense. And including Centurion that looks nothing like Fred-104’s Centurion but still retains the name is just confusing. And only including a couple of armor sets per character made little sense.
Okay, yeah, you’re right - the armor choices in Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer are weird. I do think the ones that are there look okay; my biggest gripe is the lack of sets. I would’ve thought they could’ve used this project as an opportunity to update some of their more classic skins that featured in Halo 4 and include them here. Or they could have used this to preview/tease some Halo 5: Guardians armors, which would’ve been awesome, since the Halo 5: Guardians beta took place just over a month after this game’s launch. Centurion would’ve been the perfect starter to that if it looked anything like Fred’s Centurion. But like five armor sets? I smell time crunch concerns. Seriously, just look at the character models. The lighting shaders look incomplete and some of the textures are terrible. It’s especially obvious in first person, where the Spartan’s gloves don’t catch light under any circumstances and actually don’t look like the texture of a techsuit anyways. The assets are rendered terribly is what I’m saying. Not only is there a limited number of armor skins, but they’re all poorly realized in an otherwise beautiful engine, too.

The Elite Minor is a perfect blend of the old and the new while the other two Elite armors give us a little lore/story behind them which was explained in a canon fodder, variety is always good. But I still agree with you, if it’s an old game, it should’ve kept the old styles. Zealots<3
I personally love the H2A armors. I think they are a perfect blend of the old and new style. I personally think that Halo 2 Anniversary Mk VI looks much more like the original MK VI than it does the 4 & 5 versions. While I am fine with the 4 and 5 style, H2A is really how the newer games should look.
It’s not just the armor that looks weird, but the weapons and vehicles too. They look too new and the light/shading on them is strange compared to the gritty environments.

Combat, Officer, and Zealot seem to fit more with Halo 2. None of the Elites in Halo 2 have full helmets, so…

I think it should’ve been like this:
Spartan IIs-Campaign models
Armor-Mark 6, CEA Mark 5, and either Wars Mark 4 or Reach Noble 6 armor.
Elites-Campaign models
Armor- Combat harness, Heretic suits, and either honor guard suits or Jetpack suits.
In my opinion I like the armor style in Halo 2 Anniversary, even though it does look like the Halo 4-5 armor, it still kept still kept the classic design while adding some aspects of the new art style. I feel like 343 should have used the design form H2A in Halo 4 because it looks more like a next generation of the old armor and it wouldn’t have been as jarring as to see as the Halo 4 armor style.

This is likely due to H2A multiplayer uses Halo 4’s engine.

I don’t like the new Armor sets at all. Though the Spartan ones aren’t as bad as like 75% of the Halo 5 selection, the Elite ones are plain ugly.
I think when designing armor for games 343 should always take what has made canon appearances into account first, especially what appears in the game in question. Mark V is a good pick for Spartans, but I think ODST would be more fitting as a third option, as ODSTs first appeared in Halo 2, and their armor is available in all of the other games in MCC (or at least it will be when the DLC content gets released for 4).
And yeah, the Elites look awful. Which is a shame because Halo 2 is what I picture in my mind for how Elites are supposed to look, with spotless, shiny, elegant armor combining smooth round pieces with sharp points. And finished with a glossy paint reminiscent of a sports car. The alternates are the most over detailed garbage I’ve ever seen on an Elite in the series, and if they had to go with Halo 4/5 designs they could have at least pulled from the Officer, General, Ranger, or Zealot sets for those games, but opting for Halo 2 themed armor such as the Rangers, Heretics, or Honor Guards would have been more fitting in general.
