What's the trick to becoming a great sniper?

…For the Team Snipers playlist that is. Is it all eye-thumb coordination, or are there other strategies at work for just quick perfect aiming alone?

I believe I have all strategies down along with quickness, but my window of aiming seems random. My headshots are pure luck. It makes me wonder if players are using a keyboard and mouse.

So, are there tricks at play, or are people just that good? If it’s tricks, what are they?

I have been saying what Tommy Kost (A great Halo Player) is saying in this video since I joined the forum.

I am also an experienced player and I could give you one tip, which is to try to line up your shots. Predict where your enemy is going, and hard-scope to kill him.

“I just try shooting them in the face”

Although the whole vid makes it moar funny

haha thanks

If you have a PC, download a game called quake live and go into a rail gun only server,

The rail gun from that game was what the halo 1-3 snipers were based on, so it’s good practice if you have trouble getting use to the halo 3 sniper…

For those who don’t know what the rail gun is, imagine the halo 3 sniper if it could only no scope…

Head shots will be hard to get at first, so just go for charge shoots at first, then slowly move into aiming for the head, this is good practice for snapshots

I played that game for about a week before returning to the halo 3 sniper, and since then time I get a sniper I can get no scopes snaps with ease…

If you have trouble scoping in, use the scout in counter strike ( more or less the same as the halo 3 sniper, except it takes 3 shots to the body to kill instead of 2)for a while… Again, go for head shots…

So, if your having trouble with no scopes or 1 hit scope shots, then these 2 games will be pretty good practice…

Instead of going to all those games to become better in Halo 3, why just don’t play Halo 3 custom games or snipers in the Sniper playlist?

It’s going for. The personable xpierience of me and many people I know.

Sometimes playing a different type of game with a similar weapon style can really help you get the swing of a certai. Weapon…

Before I did this, I couldn’t perfect my aim because I wasn’t use to requiring pinpoint accuracy

These are PC games played with a mouse and not controller. As I have both Counter Strike and Quake Live for the Xbox 360 I would say that these games can’t compare to the fast and intense game-play of Octagon in Halo 3 in terms of achieving better aim faster. As you never remove your aim from the opponent it surely is the best way to practice aim.

1.yes they can
2. They are great for sliding into the mechanics of the halo sniper rifle in a way most people can relate to rather than just constantly failing to get kills in a multiplayer match

Are you talking about when playing it on the PC or Xbox 360?

If you are talking about the PC games I don’t see how playing with a mouse and keyboard improves your aiming skills with a controller.

Nobody should buy the ported games to the 360 when the best choice is Octagon and other free for all custom games.

Halo 3 has the smallest head hitbox in the entire franchise. The best advice I can give is aim for the cranium, not the face. You are far more likely to headshot if you aim as high up on their head as possible.

There’s nothing wrong with hard-scoping in team snipers (as stated earlier I believe).

The biggest adjustment for me way back when was learning to strafe into my shots whether scoped or not, as opposed to trying to get a quick swipe using mainly the right stick.

That and just practice will likely make the difference, the quick players you’re talking about rely on muscle memory and that comes from being comfortable aiming, timing and strafing with the sniper.

I can only tell you this. Practice. Feel the rifle in your hands/controller. Know it’s power, and aim for the central chest. If the enemy is fighting another, you can get a body shot and pick them off. If they jump, their feet are good targets.
