Is it going to be like an FPS RPG like Far cry? I can’t really see a mainstream Halo game thats RPG. Like, what can you do in an open world Halo Infinite? When you finish side objectives, what will you be able to win? You cant unlock armor and put it on, so unless the map changes and grants an advantage to the game like a dominion feel, thats the only way. Though that is so broad, there better be other things we can do. If its not just a bunch of random events without reward, then they better be some large immersive events like random all out battles from ground and air.
Sorry, I just don’t see a lot to do. I remember an old PS2 games where it was free roam with nothing to do besides run and gun at certain spots. If it is that, then hopefully like I said, they make it action packed…
Hopefully the game will offer a variety of different quests to complete (not just “Go here, kill that”) and maybe like GTA: San Andreas you can participate in small-scale battles to win ground for the UNSC, which will give fast-travel points and weapon armories. By killing enemies, and completing missions, you earn skill points that can be put either into attributes such as accuracy, agility, etc. like a more traditional RPG or more realistically a skill tree system with perks. You can take a weapon or ability to a weapon armory, where if you “register” a lot of that same weapon or ability, you have the ability to “requisition” it, basically take it out and add it to your loadout at any time.
Open worlds will allow for harder-to-find skulls and terminals. Is GameFAQs still a thing? I’m gonna need them walkthroughs.

It’s not gonna be open world as in, GTA/Red Dead/Far Cry kind of open world, more like linear but with alot of exploration. Kind of like the level lay out for Combat Evolved and Halo 3 ODST, but on steroids.
My thoughts on how an open world Halo would work.
Main quest is a mission to take down a Banished vehicle platoon occupying a valley that is between your firebase and a forerunner structure you need to access.
Side quest is to rescue marines from banished capture, being held in a nearby cave area. When you do the quest you find out it’s not just marines. It’s actually a heavy weapons ODST squad.
If you complete the side quest first, an ODST loaded warthog accompanies you to assault the Banished vehicle platoon on the main quest. There’s also an ODST’ with a rocket who rides passenger in your vehicle during the assault.
So there’s no crazy RPG element required, but doing the side quest “levels up” you up because you get better gear and support for the main quest.
Just an example of how it COULD be done.

Well, thats why halo infinite will be “semi-open world” i mean, it will not be like gta 5.
Being an open world game, but not really, do you guys think Halo Infinite will have traditional levels? As in, suppose I want to replay some parts of the story, will I be able to select it from a menu?
In other words, do you think the semi-open world levels in Halo Infinite will basically be like Silent Cartographer on steroids? Or is the comparison with FarCry (yuck!) more accurate?
I like the idea, putting time into a campaign and having fun alone with friends in a open world area just seems hilarious and will make me have a lot of memories in it
My impression thus far has been that halo Infinite will be similar to an open-world game, but not a true open-world game. The story will mostly be linear, but the play space will be massive, with areas to explore and different routes to take to get to the next objective. Maybe that’s not the case and Infinite will be a full-blown open-world RPG, but I don’t see that happening with the way it’s being portrayed so far. The game demo from a while back was a linear mission, but it seemed that you could take a few different routes to complete it.

I really hope Halo Infinite doesn’t go too far down the open world path. I’ve always found open world games underwhelming, as they tend to struggle to deliver compelling story experiences.
Unlike traditional linear games where the story is tightly bound to the gameplay, in my experience with open world games, the player is more often just dropped in a large sandbox and instructed to go complete random, bland missions that have little or no accompanying narrative and only really serve as a time sink.
While old-school linear games may not have the technical scope of open world games, they’re much more effective at delivering great story experiences (including the Halo games). Open world games just haven’t been able to do that as well: Even some developers have admitted that the open world approach comes at the expense of the narrative.
I love being immersed in great story: That’s the real appeal of the games (like Halo) that I keep coming back to. I hope Halo doesn’t lose that.

It has these ODST vibes. I have been thinking it could be Gears 5… I hope not. I do know back in the day Halo was ment to be open explorer style but they went linear for CE. I hope the original ideas stay and it works out amazingly. I like ODSTs style. I hope its more of that but huge and more in depth.
It will most likely just be like some of Halo CE and Halo 3 ODST’s boards. Where you go to an objective with many paths and then deal with the objective in multiple ways. There were also probably be linear missions.
I mean… zelda made “open world game in a traditionally linear series that probably wouldnt work too well with open world games” work somehow (on the first try too)

yeah a skill tree would be nice for things, and maybe fast travel would be a thing, since there was teleporting in halo wars 2 w/ the banished forces then UNSC

I mean thats already a thing. Halo is already making puzzles, hide and seek for skulls is already as well. I don’t think putting a skull at a high point in the map is an improvement to skull finding challenge
If you look at Halo 3 ODST, the only thing you can do is look for phone calls and kill covenant.

There is only so much you can do to walk around a virtual beautiful landscape. Meaning without any consistent activity, it can get boring fast.

That is something I did relate to in my post, only rewards you can get completing small objectives if they change a gameplay situation in a fixed event.
But that would mean the side missions will always be limited to the moment and always changing. If a side mission gives you a tank for the main mission, but you do the main mission first… then the side missions offers nothing in the end because its reward purpose is for the main mission.
Halo infinite is not an open world game. 343 has yet to even once call it open world.
Its expansive and has open ended levels just like how halo CE had some levels that didnt always point you in one direction. Halo infinite will still have you going from level to level but several of the levels will be massively open ended and giving you choices of things to do.
But dont expect generic open world one map gameplay from infinite and thats a blessing. The world has too many boring games all trying to pull the same one map open world tropes.

There could very easily be an alternative reward for the player if they already completed the associated main quest. Maybe the warthog you have at your firebase gets replaced by an Oni warthog while you’re in the current region for example. Or it could be as basic as a collectible and a weapons cache unlocking (like H3 ODST).
But yea, coming up with an event tree to take things like what missions a player has/ has not completed into account is a basic part of designing open world objectives.
