Whats the difference between a Marine and a ODST and also why are ODSTs so cocky and not get along too much with Spartans? i remember seeing these things in Halo Fall of Reach animated film and Halo Legends. i know ODSTs are better than Marines and they also receive different training but i want to know more in depth.
Most ODST’s didn’t get along with the Spartan-II’s because they were better than them in every way and were pretty much seen as the would-be saviours of humanity despite the other marines doing an equally good job. Not to mention that John successfully killed or fatally wounded three or four ODST’s when he was just a child.

ODST’s are special forces, receiving better training and equipment than the main ground troops. The main thing the ODSTs have against the Spartans is the fact ONI used the ODSTs as fodder for the Spartans’ training, and several ODSTs were killed or maimed.

That’s rather dark and really sad to see ONI use there own troops to be used as punching bags to train Spartans instead of coming up with something else

So I’m other words the lower ranks were overlapped by the success of the Spartans and where never given the proper recognition and can also be said that the were replaced in almost every way
One is a regular forces and one is special forces. There we go.
one gets stuck in a drop pod and dropped thru the atmosphere, the other takes a pelican or frigate down

That was more of a one time thing than a regular occurrence, but you are right that it was messed up.
What really made the ODSTs dislike the Spartans was the fact that ODSTs were putting in the hard work of defending humanity just as much as the Spartans were, but the Spartans were getting all the glory. That dynamic has actually made for some fantastic character-driven moments in the Halo extended universe. Read “Silent Storm” if you want a good example of the friction between Spartans and ODSTs.
Fun fact before Halo 2 the only distinction between ODST and Marines were an arm band that said ODST because Halo the Flood said Truth and Reconciliation had ODSTs with us but in the game it looked like regular Marines.
ODSTs are supposed to be special forces compared to mainline Marines.

ODSTs were basically the spartans before the spartans. They were the best of the best only to be stripped of that power by the Spartans and all of the UNSC war propaganda showed spartans, not ODSTs
ODST’s are likely mad that they do an equal Job to Spartans and Spartans are seen to have a God status.
First of all, ODSTs are Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. ODSTs drop down from the upper atmosphere into the battlefield. Marines are sent into battle on foot or from Pelicans or Warthogs. ODSTs have more advanced armor and weapons than marines.
Also, ODSTs probably hate Spartans because they were trained along with Spartan IIs, and watched John-117 kill two or three ODSTs and badly injured one.
The Marine Corps represent the vanguard and bulk of expeditionary combat operations in the field. According to the lore, they do share a close relationship with the navy given the interdependent relationship that’s necessitated in the era of space voyaging and the need to travel by ship to get to most locations.
ODSTs are special operations commandos and are used for a variety of things including counter insurgency initiatives and behind enemy lines sabotage. When you get down to the details of the ODSTs and what it is they do, you can actually find a number of similarities between them and the Spartans. They can be used for turning the tides of battle and are highly efficient in the field. In the book “The Flood” Keyes even admitted that he felt confident that if the Chief weren’t available he could rely on the ODSTs to reach Halo’s control centre before the Covenant. It’s like they’re somewhere in between your standard marine unit and a Spartan.

Very well said.
To address the OPs other question. I believe ODSTs are so cocky because they were the best the UNSC had to offer for a very long time. As for the seeming animosity towards Spartans, imagine if you were the best for a long time and suddenly someone new came along and became the new poster boy for the UNSC. You probably wouldn’t be too thrilled about it.
ok i may be wrong. but this is what i know
there were ODSTs before spartans
they were basically the spartans before the spartans, the most elite team
when they made spartans, the propaganda overthrew the ODSTs and spartans were now the most loved by civilians
the ODSTs were salty about it and now hate spartans
another thing is that ONI uses ODSTs as cannon fodder for spartan practice
Differences between ODSTs and marines:
- ODSTs drop in pods
- Marines go in pelicans and frigates
- ODSTs have advanced training
- Marines are more mass trained, meaning lesser quality training
- ODSTs have better armor and weapon access
- Marines have less armor and weapon access
There’s enough excrement flying around here to fill a swimming pool. Can people please refrain from spouting poorly remembered nonsense as canonical fact.
- ODSTs were not jealous of Spartans for ‘stealing glory’ because until 2547, Spartan II programme was still classified. - The only provenance that ONI used ODSTs to ‘test’ John aboard the Atlas comes from Major Silva (Pillar of Autumn’s senior ODST). As far as John was aware until that point, the ODSTs picked a fight with him, their Sergeant told them to work it out in the ring, John accidentally killed two of them in a boxing bout. If that was indeed an ONI set up, it’s pretty bad, but likewise it did cause some bad blood for those in the know. First rule of sparring: never harm your opponent. - ODSTs aren’t all commandos - some are in special ops units, but the vast majority are more like paratroopers. Within that it’s kinda like the difference between a paratrooper and the SAS. - Being like Paratroopers they consider themselves the best of the best and go through tougher training and selection than regular Marines and Infantry - The ODSTs in Silent Storm are an incredibly specialist unit. Their hackles are up at the idea that non-ODSTs can even do what they do.
